Akedah (Hebrew: 'the binding') is the story of Abraham's test when God asked him to sacrifice Isaac. It is one of the Bible's most dramatic narratives - and a powerful image of God the Father sacrificing His own Son.

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" And he answered, "Here I am."

Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took his two servants with him, and his son Isaac. He split the wood for the burnt offering, then set out for the place God had told him about.

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will come back to you."

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he carried the fire and the knife in his own hand. So the two of them walked on together.

Isaac spoke to his father Abraham: "Father?" "Yes, my son," he answered. Isaac said, "Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

Abraham said, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them walked on together.

When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered.

"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me."

Abraham looked up, and there behind him was a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. He went over, took the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

So Abraham named that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."

The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time

and said, "By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD: because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

I will surely bless you and greatly multiply your offspring, like the stars in the sky and like the sand on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gate of their enemies,

and in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice."

Then Abraham returned to his servants, and together they set out for Beersheba. And Abraham settled in Beersheba.

Some time later Abraham was told, "Milcah too has borne sons to your brother Nahor:

Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,

Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."

Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

Characters

Abraham faces his greatest test of faith in this chapter. His response, "Hinne-ni" (vv. 1, 11), and immediate obedience (v. 3) demonstrate his mature faith after decades of walking with God.

Isaac appears strong enough to carry the wood for the sacrifice up the mountain (v. 6). The text does not specify his age, and Jewish tradition has varied in its estimates from a young boy to an adult man. His question about the sacrificial lamb (v. 7) and his apparent willing submission at the binding have been the subject of extensive theological reflection in both Jewish and Christian traditions.

Rebekah is introduced in the genealogy (v. 23) as the daughter of Bethuel, Abraham's nephew. This prepares the narrative for chapter 24, where she becomes Isaac's wife. The genealogy links the line of promise back to Abraham's family in Mesopotamia and shows that God had already prepared Isaac's future spouse.

Nahor and Milcah represent the branch of Abraham's family that remained in Mesopotamia (cf. 11:27–32). Milcah bore eight sons (v. 23), and his concubine Reumah bore four (v. 24)—twelve in total, a pattern paralleling other genealogies in Genesis, including Ishmael's twelve sons (25:13–16) and Jacob's twelve sons.

Places

The land of Moriah (הַמֹּרִיָּה, ha-Moriyyah) is the only place in the Pentateuch where this name appears. The journey took three days from Beersheba (v. 4), corresponding to approximately 75–80 kilometers to the Jerusalem area. Later Jewish tradition (2 Chron. 3:1) identifies Moriah with the mountain in Jerusalem where Solomon built the temple. This connection gave the site enormous theological significance in Jewish tradition, viewing Abraham's sacrifice as a precursor to the temple's sacrificial service. The Samaritan tradition, however, identified the place with Mount Gerizim.

Beersheba is mentioned as Abraham's dwelling both before and after the event (v. 19).

Events and Customs

Child sacrifice was a known practice in the ancient Near East, especially among the Canaanites and Phoenicians. The narrative in Genesis 22 marks a radical break with this practice: Israel's God stops the sacrifice and provides a substitute, fundamentally distinguishing Yahweh worship from surrounding religions.

The burnt offering (עֹלָה, olah) was the most complete form of sacrifice, where the entire animal was burned on the altar. The root of the word means "to go up"—the smoke ascended to God. That Abraham prepared this sacrifice shows that he fully understood what God requested.

Key Terms

"Hinne-ni" (הִנֵּנִי, "Here I am") is used three times in the chapter: as an answer to God (v. 1), to Isaac (v. 7), and to the angel (v. 11). The expression signals complete availability and obedience. It implies more than physical presence—it expresses readiness to act.

"Your only son" (יְחִידְךָ, yechidkha) emphasizes Isaac's irreplaceable position. Although Abraham had Ishmael, Isaac was the son of promise. The word yachid denotes something unique and irreplaceable.

"Akedah" (עֲקֵדָה) comes from the verb עָקַד (aqad, "to bind") in verse 9, and became in Jewish tradition the technical term for the entire narrative—the "Binding of Isaac." This is the only place in the Bible where this verb is used regarding binding a human being.

"JHVH Jir'eh" (יְהוָה יִרְאֶה, "The Lord will see/provide") in verse 14 plays on the Hebrew verb ra'ah, which means both "to see" and "to provide." The place name connects God's foresight and care with His presence.
