The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month of the second year after they came out of the land of Egypt. He said:
"Take a census of the whole community of Israel, clan by clan and family by family, listing every male by name, one by one—
twenty years old and upward—everyone in Israel fit for military service. You and Aaron are to register them by their divisions.
These are the names of the men who will stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;
These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.
and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole community. The people registered their ancestry by clan and family, and all the men twenty years old and upward were listed by name, one by one,
The descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, one by one, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500.
The descendants of Simeon: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The descendants of Gad: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650.
The descendants of Judah: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The descendants of Issachar: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400.
The descendants of Zebulun: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
From the sons of Joseph—the descendants of Ephraim: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The descendants of Manasseh: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The descendants of Benjamin: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The number from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400.
The descendants of Dan: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The descendants of Asher: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
The descendants of Naphtali: all the men twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were listed by name, according to their genealogy, by clan and family.
These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.
So all the Israelites twenty years old and upward who were fit for military service were counted by their families.
The total came to 603,550.
"The tribe of Levi, however, you are not to count; do not include them in the census of the Israelites.
Instead, put the Levites in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law, with all its furnishings and everything that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to care for it and camp around it.
Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites shall take it down, and whenever it is to be set up, the Levites shall raise it. Anyone else who comes near it must be put to death.
But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the covenant law, so that no wrath may fall on the community of Israel. The Levites are to keep watch over the tabernacle of the covenant law."
The Israelites did just as the LORD had commanded Moses; everything he commanded, so they did.
