Jesus tells three parables in response to criticism from the Pharisees: "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." All are about the joy of finding what was lost.

The Lost Sheep

A shepherd leaves ninety-nine sheep to find the one that is lost. When he finds it, he carries it home with joy and celebrates with friends. In the same way, there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.

The Lost Coin

A woman has ten silver coins and loses one. She lights a lamp, sweeps the house and searches until she finds it. In the same way, there is joy among God's angels over one sinner who repents.

The Lost Son

The younger son takes his inheritance and squanders it. He ends up feeding pigs, but returns home. The father runs to meet him, embraces him and throws a feast. The older brother becomes angry, but the father says: "We had to celebrate, because this brother of yours was dead and is now alive."

11For the Son of Man came to save what was lost.

12What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, won't he leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go looking for the one that strayed?

13And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never strayed.

14In the same way, it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.

2And the Pharisees and the scribes kept grumbling, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."

3So he told them this parable:

4"Which one of you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost one until he finds it?

5And when he finds it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing,

6and when he comes home he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.'

7I tell you, in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.

Then he said: "There was a man who had two sons.
The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the estate that is coming to me.' So he divided his property between them.
Not many days later the younger son gathered everything together and left for a distant country, and there he squandered his wealth in reckless living.
When he had spent it all, a severe famine swept through that country, and he began to be in need.
So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.
He longed to fill his stomach with the pods the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
Then he came to himself and said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have more than enough bread, while I am dying here of hunger!
I will get up and go to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.
I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired hands.'
So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion. He ran to him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.
The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'
But the father said to his servants, 'Quick, bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Bring the fattened calf and slaughter it. Let us eat and celebrate,
for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' And they began to celebrate.
Meanwhile his older son was out in the field. As he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.
So he called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
He told him, 'Your brother has come home, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf, because he has him back safe and sound.'
Then he became angry and refused to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.
But he answered his father, 'Look, all these years I have served you, and I have never disobeyed a command of yours; yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.
But when this son of yours came home—the one who devoured your living with prostitutes—you slaughtered the fattened calf for him!'
The father said to him, 'My child, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive; he was lost and is found.'"
