You yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain.

On the contrary, though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated in Philippi, as you know, we found courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of great struggle.

For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity, nor is it made with deceit.

Instead, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak—not to please people, but God, who tests our hearts.

We never came with flattering words, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is our witness—

nor did we seek glory from people, either from you or from anyone else,

though as apostles of Christ we could have insisted on our own importance. Instead, we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother caring for her own children.[^1] [^1]: The phrase rendered "insisted on our own importance" can also mean "been a burden to you," that is, made financial demands.

So deep was our affection for you that we were glad to share with you not only the gospel of God but our own lives as well, because you had become dear to us.

You remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, uprightly, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves toward you believers.

For you know how we dealt with each one of you as a father deals with his own children,

encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

And for this reason we also thank God constantly: when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it truly is, the word of God, which is also at work in you who believe.

since you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,[^1] [^1]: Here the reference is to those Jewish leaders and opponents who persecuted the churches in Judea, not to the Jewish people as a whole; the apostle and the Judean churches were themselves Jewish.

who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out; they do not please God and are hostile to everyone,

hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last.

But we, brothers, torn away from you for a short time—in person, not in heart—made every effort, with great longing, to see you face to face.

For we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan blocked our way.

For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you?

Yes, you are our glory and our joy.
