Finally, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus: as you received from us instruction in how you ought to live and please God — and this is how you are living — do so all the more.

For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

This is the will of God: your sanctification. Keep away from sexual immorality.

Each of you must know how to take a wife for himself in holiness and honor,* [*Or: how to control his own body in holiness and honor.]

not in the passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.

No one should overstep or take advantage of his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, as we told you before and solemnly warned you.

For God did not call us to impurity, but to live in holiness.

Therefore whoever rejects this does not reject a human being but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

About brotherly love there is no need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,

and indeed you are doing this for all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do so all the more,

and to make it your ambition to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, just as we instructed you,

so that you may conduct yourselves properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.

For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so also God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.

This we tell you by the word of the Lord: we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

So encourage one another with these words.

Events and Customs

Paul’s exhortations regarding sexual purity (vv. 3–8) must be understood against the moral climate of Thessalonica. As a typical Greco-Roman trading city, sexual immorality was widespread and socially accepted. Temple prostitution occurred in cults dedicated to Dionysus and Aphrodite, and extramarital relationships were normal for men. For newly converted Gentiles, Christian sexual morality represented a radical break from their former lives and cultural surroundings.

The call to "work with your hands" (vv. 11–12) addresses a specific situation. Some in the congregation had apparently stopped working, possibly due to expectations of the Lord’s imminent return. In the Greco-Roman world, manual labor was often looked down upon by the upper class, but Paul – himself a tentmaker – emphasizes the dignity of work. The exhortation to "live quietly" may also reflect concern that restless Christians could attract negative attention from authorities.

Key Terms

The term σκεῦος (skeuos, "vessel/tool") in verse 4 is debated. It can mean either "one’s own body" or "one’s own wife". Regardless of the interpretation, the phrase "to acquire in holiness and honor" underscores the contrast with pagan practice (τὰ ἔθνη, "the Gentiles"), characterized by "passionate lust".

Inscriptions and tomb monuments from the first-century Greco-Roman world confirm Paul’s description of Gentiles as "those who have no hope" (v. 13). Numerous grave inscriptions express deep despair and hopelessness toward death, with phrases such as "I was not, I came to be, I am not, I do not care" – a common Epicurean formula. Other inscriptions lament the meaninglessness of life and the finality of death. This contrast makes Paul’s words about the hope of resurrection all the more striking for his first readers.
