So there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

What the law could not do, weakened as it was by the flesh, God did: he sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, and so he condemned sin in the flesh,

so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on what belongs to the flesh; those who live according to the Spirit, on what belongs to the Spirit.

The mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.

For the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God: it does not submit to God's law—indeed, it cannot.

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, if in fact God's Spirit dwells in you. And anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

But if Christ is in you, then although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

So then, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

For if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

For you did not receive a spirit of slavery, to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, in whom we cry, "Abba! Father!"

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed in us.

For creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God.

For creation was subjected to futility—not by its own choice, but because of the one who subjected it—in hope

that creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom of the glory of God's children.

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in labor pains until now.

And not only creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

For in hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all—who hopes for what he already sees?

But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

In the same way, the Spirit also helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to God's will.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

And those he predestined he also called; those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

What, then, shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, freely give us everything?

Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who justifies.

Who is there to condemn? Christ Jesus died—more than that, he was raised—and he is at God's right hand, and he intercedes for us.

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Hardship or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or the sword?

As it is written: "For your sake we are being put to death all day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered."

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,

neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Σάρξ (sarx) and πνεῦμα (pneuma) – "flesh" and "Spirit"

Paul uses these terms consistently throughout the chapter (vv. 1–13), but not in a Greek-philosophical sense where matter is evil and spirit is good. For Paul, σάρξ describes humanity's condition under the dominion of sin—the old created order—while πνεῦμα refers to the work of God’s Spirit creating new reality. This differs from both Stoic and Platonic dualism, which were widespread in the Hellenistic world.

Υἱοθεσία (huiothesia) – "adoption as sons"

The concept in verses 15 and 23 is drawn primarily from Roman law. Jewish practice also knew adoption, but it was far less legally formalized than in Roman law. Adoption was very common in Roman culture, especially among the upper class. An adopted son received full inheritance rights, his previous debts were canceled, and he gained a new legal identity under the authority of his new father (patria potestas). Emperor Augustus himself was adopted by Julius Caesar. For Roman readers, this was a powerful image of the believer’s new status.

Αββα ὁ πατήρ (Abba ho patēr) – "Abba, Father"

In verse 15, Paul uses the Aramaic word "Abba" together with its Greek translation. This was a familiar and intimate term of address used for one’s father, not only by small children but also by adult family members. It reflects Jesus’ own prayer practice (Mark 14:36). The fact that Paul retains the Aramaic word suggests it had become established as a liturgical expression in the early church, even among Greek-speaking congregations.

Κληρονόμοι (klēronomoi) – "heirs"

The concept of inheritance in verse 17 carried legal weight in Roman law. Unlike Jewish practice, where the firstborn received a double portion, Roman law allowed for equal distribution. That believers are "co-heirs with Christ" (συγκληρονόμοι) implies full participation in Christ’s glory and rights.

Creation’s Expectation and Birth Pains

In verses 19–22, Paul uses the image of birth pains (συνωδίνει) to describe creation’s longing. This motif was known from Jewish apocalyptic literature, where "the Messiah’s birth pangs" described the sufferings that would come before the messianic age. Texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls (especially 1QH) use similar language regarding end-time trials.

The Spirit’s Intercession with "Inexpressible Groanings"

The idea in verses 26–27 that the Spirit intercedes with "στεναγμοῖς ἀλαλήτοις" (inexpressible groanings) is interpreted differently. Some scholars see a connection to speaking in tongues (glossolalia), while others interpret it as the Spirit’s inner work within the believer’s heart, or point to Jewish tradition concerning heavenly intercession.

The List of Sufferings and Cosmic Powers

In verses 35–39, Paul mentions both earthly sufferings (tribulation, persecution, hunger, sword) and cosmic powers (angels, rulers, height, depth). The list of earthly sufferings reflects real dangers Christians could face in the Roman Empire. The terms "height" (ὕψωμα) and "depth" (βάθος) may have astrological connotations—in antiquity many believed that the positions of the stars controlled destiny. Paul rejects the idea that any such power can separate believers from God’s love.

The conclusion of the chapter (vv. 31–39) follows the pattern of Greco-Roman rhetoric with a series of rhetorical questions building toward a climax. The structure "If God is for us, who can be against us?" followed by unanswerable accusations (vv. 33–34) resembles legal argumentation from ancient courtrooms, which would have resonated with Roman readers familiar with forensic rhetoric.
