A psalm. A song for the dedication of the house. Of David.

I will exalt you, LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.

LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you healed me.

LORD, you brought me up from the realm of the dead; you kept me alive so I would not go down to the pit.

Sing to the LORD, you his faithful ones; give thanks to his holy name.

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor a lifetime. Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes in the morning.

When I felt secure, I said, "I will never be shaken."

LORD, in your favor you made my mountain stand firm; but when you hid your face, I was terrified.

To you, LORD, I called; to the Lord I pleaded for mercy:

"What is gained by my blood, if I go down to the pit? Can dust praise you? Can it proclaim your faithfulness?

Hear me, LORD, and have mercy on me; LORD, be my helper."

You turned my mourning into dancing; you stripped off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,

so that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. LORD my God, I will thank you forever.

Later Jewish tradition associated this psalm with the celebration of Hanukkah and the rededication of the temple in 164 B.C.E. during the Maccabean revolt.

The psalm describes a dramatic shift from sorrow to joy. Verse 12 notes that the psalmist exchanged "sackcloth" (שַׂק, sak) for dancing. Sackcloth was a coarse, dark fabric made of goat hair worn next to the skin as a sign of mourning, repentance, or humility. Removing the sackcloth and putting on festive garments marked the end of a period of grief and served as a publicly visible sign of a changed life situation.
