Are we starting to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you?

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.

You show that you are a letter from Christ, delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

Such is the confidence we have toward God through Christ.

Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence comes from God,

who has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Now if the ministry that brought death, engraved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, a glory that was fading away,

how much greater will be the glory of the ministry of the Spirit?

For if the ministry that brought condemnation had glory, how much more does the ministry that brings righteousness overflow with glory!

Indeed, what once had glory has no glory now in comparison with the glory that surpasses it.

For if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of what endures!

Since we have such a hope, we act with great boldness.

We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at the end of what was fading away.

But their minds were hardened. To this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read; it has not been lifted, because it is in Christ that it is set aside.

Yes, to this day, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts.

But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

And all of us, with unveiled faces, beholding the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are being transformed into that same image, from glory to glory—which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

People

Moses (Μωϋσῆς) is the central Old Testament figure in this chapter, mentioned by name three times (vv. 7, 13, 15). Paul specifically refers to the account in Exodus 34:29–35, where Moses' face shone after he received the law on Mount Sinai. In Jewish tradition during Paul's time, Moses was the most highly honored figure after the patriarchs, and his role as lawgiver was undisputed. Philo of Alexandria (c. 20 BCE–50 CE) described Moses as the perfect prophet and lawgiver. Paul's argument would have been bold for Jewish readers, since he places the ministry of the new covenant above that of Moses.

Events and Customs

Letters of recommendation (συστατικῶν ἐπιστολῶν) were an established practice in the Greco-Roman world. Such letters were used by traveling teachers, philosophers, and merchants to confirm their identity and credibility. In a church context, we see this practice also in Acts 18:27 (Apollos) and Romans 16:1–2 (Phoebe). Paul implies that some opponents in Corinth had brought such letters, while he himself did not need them because the congregation itself was his "letter."

Synagogue reading is mentioned indirectly in verses 14–15, where Paul refers to the reading of "the old covenant" (τῆς παλαιᾶς διαθήκης).
