So I made up my mind not to pay you another painful visit.

For if I cause you pain, who is left to cheer me but the very people I have hurt?

I wrote as I did so that when I came I would not be pained by those who ought to make me rejoice. I was confident about all of you, that my joy is the joy of every one of you.

I wrote to you out of great distress and anguish of heart, with many tears—not to cause you pain, but to let you know how abundantly I love you.

If anyone has caused pain, he has not pained me alone but, in some measure—I do not want to overstate it—all of you.

The punishment imposed on such a man by the majority is enough.

Now, instead, you should forgive and comfort him, so that he is not overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

So I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.

This is also why I wrote: to test you and see whether you are obedient in everything.

Anyone you forgive, I forgive as well. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven for your sake in the presence of Christ,

so that Satan might not outwit us; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.

When I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, and a door was opened for me in the Lord,

even so, my spirit could find no rest, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in his triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing:

to the one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. And who is equal to such a task?

For we are not like so many, peddling the word of God for profit. On the contrary, we speak in Christ with sincerity, as sent from God and standing in his presence.

People

"The one who caused grief" (vv. 5–11) refers to a specific person in the congregation who had acted against Paul or his authority. The identity of this individual is debated. Some scholars believe it is the incestuous sinner from 1 Corinthians 5, while others argue it concerns another person who directly offended Paul, possibly during his painful visit. The church has now disciplined this person, and Paul urges reconciliation.

Places

Troas (Τρῳάς, v. 12) was an important port city on the northwest coast of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), near ancient Troy. Officially called Alexandria Troas, it was a Roman colony with significant commercial activity. It served as a hub for travel between Asia and Macedonia, and archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of harbor facilities, baths, and a large basilica.
