In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had appeared to me earlier.

In the vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa, in the province of Elam; and in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal.

I looked up, and there before me stood a ram beside the canal. It had two horns, both of them long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one came up last.

I watched the ram charging west and north and south. No animal could stand against it, and none could rescue from its power. It did as it pleased and became great.

While I was considering this, suddenly a male goat came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground, and the goat had a conspicuous horn between its eyes.

It came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed at it in furious power.

I saw it reach the ram and, enraged against it, strike the ram and shatter its two horns. The ram had no strength to stand against it; the goat threw it to the ground and trampled it, and there was no one to rescue the ram from its power.

The male goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off, and in its place four conspicuous horns came up toward the four winds of heaven.

Out of one of them came another horn, small at first, but it grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land.

It grew until it reached the host of heaven, and it threw some of the host and some of the stars down to the earth and trampled them.

It set itself up to be as great as the Prince of the host; from him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

Because of rebellion, the host was given over to it together with the daily sacrifice. It flung truth to the ground, and whatever it did, it prospered.

Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who was speaking, "How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host to be trampled underfoot?"

He said to me, "It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be restored to its rightful state."

While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man.

And I heard a human voice from the Ulai calling out, "Gabriel, explain the vision to this man."

He came to where I was standing, and when he came I was terrified and fell facedown. "Son of man," he said to me, "understand that the vision concerns the time of the end."

While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground. Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.

He said, "I am going to tell you what will happen at the end of the time of wrath, for the vision concerns the appointed time of the end.

The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.

The shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn between its eyes is the first king.

The four horns that replaced the one that was broken off are four kingdoms that will arise from his nation, but they will not have his power.

In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise.

He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty and the holy people.

Through his cunning he will make deceit prosper under his hand, and in his own heart he will exalt himself. When they feel secure, he will destroy many; he will even take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be broken, but not by human hand.

The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been told is true, but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future."

I, Daniel, was worn out and lay ill for days. Then I got up and went about the king's business. I was appalled by the vision, and no one could explain it.

People

Belshazzar is mentioned as king in the vision dated to his third year of reign (ca. 550–548 B.C.). Historically, Belshazzar was co-regent under his father Nabonidus, the last Neo-Babylonian king. This places the vision within a Babylonian exile context, even though its content points forward to the Medo-Persian and Greek empires.

Gabriel (v. 16) is the first angel named in the Hebrew Bible. The name means "God's mighty man" or "God is my strength." In Jewish tradition, Gabriel was later counted as one of the four archangels. His task here is to give Daniel understanding of the vision—an interpretive and revelatory function.

Places

Susa (Shushan) was an ancient city in the province of Elam, by the Ulai River (in the modern Karkheh/Karun region of Iran). The city was already significant before the Persian period but later became the winter capital for the great Persian kings. That Daniel sees himself here in the vision is prophetically meaningful—Susa would become a center of power precisely for the empire represented by the ram.

"The Beautiful Land" (הַצֶּבִי, ha-tsevi, v. 9) is a poetic designation for the land of Israel, also used in Daniel 11:16, 41. The expression underscores the land's special beauty and value in God's eyes.

Events and Customs

The Daily Sacrifice (הַתָּמִיד, ha-tamid, vv. 11–13) refers to the continuous burnt offerings brought morning and evening in the temple (Exodus 29:38–42). The abolition of this sacrifice was the most serious violation of Jewish worship. Historically, this was fulfilled under Antiochus IV Epiphanes (167–164 B.C.), who halted the temple sacrifices and desecrated the temple.

The Desecration of the Sanctuary is described with the expression "the abomination that makes desolate" (הַפֶּשַׁע שֹׁמֵם). This points to historical events where temple service was interrupted and the sanctuary profaned—something experienced traumatically during the Maccabean revolt.

Archaeological excavations in Susa (modern Shush, Iran) have uncovered significant Persian palace ruins and confirm the city's role as a royal residence, just as the chapter suggests by placing Daniel's vision there.

Historical sources, especially 1 and 2 Maccabees as well as the writings of Josephus, document in detail Antiochus IV Epiphanes' persecution of the Jews (167–164 B.C.), including the cessation of temple sacrifices, the setting up of a Zeus altar in the temple, and the subsequent Maccabean revolt that led to the rededication of the temple (Hanukkah).
