A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, his holy mountain.

Beautiful in its heights, the joy of all the earth, is Mount Zion, on the far northern slopes, the city of the great King.

God is within her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress.

For look: the kings assembled, they advanced together.

They looked, and they were stunned; they were dismayed, they fled in panic.

Trembling took hold of them there, anguish like a woman in labor.

With an east wind you shattered the ships of Tarshish.

What we had heard, we have now seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish her forever. Selah.

We have pondered your steadfast love, O God, within your temple.

Like your name, O God, so is your praise, reaching to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness.

Let Mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad because of your judgments.

Walk around Zion, circle her, count her towers.

Take note of her ramparts, pass through her citadels, so that you can tell the next generation:

This is God, our God forever and ever; he will guide us beyond death.[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew of the final phrase is uncertain; it may also be read 'he will guide us forever' or 'he will be our guide to the end.'

Places

Psalm 48 is a Zion psalm that praises God and celebrates his presence in Jerusalem and on the temple hill. The expression "the heights of Zaphon" (v. 3, Hebrew yarketey tsafon) is particularly interesting. "Zaphon" was the name of the holy mountain in Canaanite-Phoenician religion, where the god Baal was believed to dwell. By applying this terminology to Zion, the psalmist makes a theological point: the God of Israel reigns where the nations thought their gods lived. Jerusalem is actually located not in the north but in southern Israel—the language is mythological and polemical, not geographical.

"The ships of Tarshish" (v. 8, Hebrew oniyyot Tarshish) refer to large seagoing merchant vessels. Tarshish was possibly Tartessos in southern Spain, though other locations have also been proposed. In any case, these ships represented the farthest western horizon in the ancient worldview and symbolized wealth, power, and human pride.

The psalm describes a situation where kings gathered against Jerusalem but were struck with panic and fled (vv. 5–8). This may allude to a historical event such as Sennacherib's failed siege in 701 B.C. (2 Kings 18–19), or it could be a poetic portrayal of God's general protection of the city. The call to "walk about Zion" and "count her towers" (vv. 13–14, Hebrew sobbu Tsiyyon... sifru migdaleyha) may reflect a pilgrimage procession in which participants walked around the city walls as part of a religious celebration.
