You foolish Galatians! Who has put you under a spell? Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed before your very eyes as crucified.

Let me ask you just one thing: did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?

Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spirit, are you now trying to finish with the flesh?

Did you suffer so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing?

So then, does God supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among you because of works of the law, or because you hear with faith?

Consider Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."

Understand, then, that those who have faith are the children of Abraham.

And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, announced the gospel to Abraham in advance: "All nations will be blessed through you."

So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse, since it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of the law."

Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because "the righteous will live by faith."

But the law is not based on faith; instead, "whoever does these things will live by them."

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree."

He did this so that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, and so that by faith we might receive the promised Spirit.

Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life: once a person's will has been ratified, no one can set it aside or add to it.

Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say "and to seeds," as though referring to many, but to one: "and to your seed"—that is, Christ.

What I mean is this: the law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not annul the covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.

For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God graciously gave it to Abraham through a promise.

Why, then, the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the coming of the seed to whom the promise was made. It was put into effect through angels by a mediator.

Now a mediator implies more than one party, but God is one.

Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? By no means! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would indeed come by the law.

But Scripture has locked up everything under sin, so that what was promised might be given, through faith in Jesus Christ, to those who believe.

Before this faith came, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.

So the law was our guardian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith.

Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, heirs according to the promise.
