What I mean is this: as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, even though he owns everything.

He is under guardians and trustees until the date his father has set.

It was the same with us. While we were children, we were held in slavery under the elemental forces of the world.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, "Abba! Father!"

So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.

But now that you know God—or rather, are known by God—how can you turn back to those weak and worthless elemental forces? Do you want to be enslaved by them all over again?

You are observing days and months and seasons and years!

I am afraid for you—afraid that all my labor for you has been wasted.

I beg you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong.

You know that it was because of a bodily illness that I first preached the gospel to you,

and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not despise or reject me. Instead, you welcomed me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus himself.

What has become of your sense of blessing? For I can testify that, if it had been possible, you would have torn out your own eyes and given them to me.

So have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?

Those people are courting you, but not with good intentions. They want to shut you out, so that you will court them.

It is always good to be sought after for a good purpose—and not only when I am with you,

my children, for whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you.

How I wish I could be with you right now and change my tone, because I am at a loss about you.

Tell me, you who want to be under the law: do you not hear what the law says?

For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and one by the free woman.

But the son of the slave woman was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through a promise.

This is to be taken figuratively: these women represent two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar.

Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia, and she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for that city is in slavery along with her children.

But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.

For it is written: "Rejoice, barren woman who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have never been in labor; for the children of the desolate woman will be more than those of her who has a husband."

You, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.

But just as at that time the son born according to the flesh persecuted the son born according to the Spirit, so it is also now.

But what does the Scripture say? "Drive out the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share the inheritance with the son of the free woman."

So then, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

A minor heir, even though legally owned everything, remained under guardians until the date set by his father. This fixed date (προθεσμία) was legally binding and could not be changed after the father’s death.

Στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου ("the elemental spirits of the world" or "basic principles of the world", vv. 3, 9) is a key term with several possible meanings in antiquity: (1) the four elements (earth, air, fire, water), (2) heavenly bodies and astrological forces, (3) basic religious principles, or (4) spiritual beings connected to natural phenomena.
