Brothers,[^1] if someone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. But watch yourself, or you too may be tempted. [^1]: The Greek word refers to fellow believers, both men and women.

Carry one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

Let each one test his own work, and then he will have reason to boast in himself alone, and not in comparison with someone else.

For each will carry his own load.

The one who is taught the word should share all good things with the one who teaches.

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked. Whatever a person sows, that is what he will reap.

The one who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

So let us not grow weary of doing good, for at the right time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up.

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to the household of faith.

See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand.

Those who want to make a good showing in the flesh are the ones trying to compel you to be circumcised—only so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.

For not even those who are circumcised keep the law themselves; they want you circumcised so that they can boast about your flesh.

But may I never boast in anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; what matters is a new creation.

Peace and mercy to all who walk by this rule, and to the Israel of God.

Events and Customs

Verse 6 describes a practice in which the one being instructed in the word (ὁ κατηχούμενος) should share all good things with their teacher (τῷ κατηχοῦντι). This reflects an established Christian teaching custom that had already developed during the first decades. The verb "katecheo" (κατηχέω) means to teach orally and gave rise to our word "catechesis." In the Greco-Roman world, it was common for students to support their philosophical teachers financially. Paul transfers this custom into church life, where those teaching in the faith were to receive material support from those they taught.

The circumcision controversy in verses 12–13 partly concerns avoiding persecution. By requiring circumcision, Christians could appear to belong to Judaism, which had a protected status within the Roman Empire. Paul reveals that part of the motivation behind the demand for circumcision was to "make a good impression in the flesh" (εὐπροσωπῆσαι ἐν σαρκί)—that is, to avoid social and political persecution linked to the scandal of the cross.

Key Terms

The expression "the law of Christ" (τὸν νόμον τοῦ Χριστοῦ) in verse 2 is unique in the New Testament. In the context of Galatians, it stands in contrast to the law discussed in the preceding chapters. Verse 11 notes that Paul writes with "large letters" (πηλίκοις γράμμασιν) in his own hand. Papyrus finds from antiquity show it was common practice for a secretary to write the main body of a letter, while the sender added the conclusion personally to authenticate the document. The "large letters" may be due to Paul not being a professional scribe, possibly having eye problems (a possible interpretation of 4:13–15), or writing in large script to emphasize the importance of the conclusion. Some scholars view this as an authenticity marker, where Paul indicates the transition from the secretary's handwriting to his own.
