I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you and for those in Laodicea, and for all who have never seen my face in person.

My aim is that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love, and reach all the riches of full assurance that comes from understanding, so that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,

in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge lie hidden.

I say this so that no one may deceive you with persuasive arguments.

For even though I am absent in body, I am with you in spirit, and I rejoice to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him,

rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, based on human tradition and the elemental forces of the world rather than on Christ.

For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily,

and in him you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every ruler and authority.

In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made by human hands, by the putting off of the body of flesh, in the circumcision of Christ,

having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

And when you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive together with him. He forgave us all our trespasses,

canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. He set it aside, nailing it to the cross.

He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in matters of food and drink, or with regard to a festival, a New Moon, or a Sabbath day.

These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Let no one disqualify you, insisting on false humility and the worship of angels, dwelling on visions he has seen, puffed up without cause by his unspiritual mind,

and not holding fast to the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

If you died with Christ to the elemental forces of the world, why, as though you still lived in the world, do you submit to rules like these:

"Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch"?

All these things are destined to perish with use, since they are based on human commands and teachings.

Such rules have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed piety, false humility, and harsh treatment of the body, but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

The rules concerning food and drink, festivals, new moons, and Sabbaths (v. 16) reflect Jewish calendar observances.
