34When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,

35and one of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"

37He answered, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

38This is the great and first commandment.

39And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'

40On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets."

28One of the scribes came up and heard them debating. Seeing that Jesus had answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?"

29Jesus answered, "The most important is this: 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one,

30and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'

31The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

32The scribe said to him, "Well said, Teacher. You are right in saying that he is one and that there is no other besides him,

33and that to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is worth far more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that no one dared to question him any further.

25Then an expert in the law stood up to test him. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

26Jesus said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"

16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You are not swayed by anyone, for you show no partiality.

17So tell us what you think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

18But Jesus knew their malice and said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?

19Show me the coin used for the tax." They brought him a denarius,

20and he asked them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?"

21"Caesar's," they said. Then he told them, "So give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God."

22When they heard this, they were amazed; they left him and went away.

23But he saw through their cunning and said to them,

26They were unable to trap him in what he said in front of the people, and amazed at his answer, they fell silent.

33"Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away on a journey.

34When harvest time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.

35But the tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned another.

36Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they treated them the same way.

37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.'

39So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

40Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?"

41They said to him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and he will lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruit at the proper seasons."

42Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?

43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

44Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and anyone it falls on will be crushed."

45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew he was speaking about them.

46They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowds, because the people regarded him as a prophet.

7But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

8So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

10Have you never read this Scripture: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;

11this came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

12They were looking for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd, for they knew he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.

10At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

11He sent another servant, and that one too they beat and humiliated and sent away empty-handed.

12He sent yet a third, and this one they wounded and threw out.

13Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.'

14But when the tenants saw him, they reasoned with one another and said, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.'

15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "May it never be!"

17But he looked straight at them and said, "Then what does this mean that is written: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone'?

Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question:
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and when he died he left no offspring.
The second married her, and he died leaving no offspring; and the third likewise.
In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife."
Jesus said to them, "Aren't you mistaken for this very reason—because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?
When people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven.
And as for the dead rising, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken."

When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that no one dared to question him any further.
As Jesus was teaching in the temple, he responded, "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David?
David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: 'The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.'
David himself calls him Lord. How then can he be his son?" And the large crowd listened to him with delight.
In his teaching he said, "Watch out for the scribes. They love to walk around in long robes and to be greeted in the marketplaces,
to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
They devour widows' houses and for show they say long prayers. These men will receive a heavier judgment."
Jesus sat down opposite the temple treasury and watched the crowd dropping their coins into it. Many rich people put in large amounts.
Then a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.* *The Greek says two lepta, the smallest coins in circulation, together equal to one quadrans, a Roman coin of very little value.
He called his disciples to him and said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the others who gave to the treasury.
For they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything she owned—all she had to live on.
