Let me sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.
He broke up the soil and cleared it of stones and planted it with choice vines. He built a watchtower in the middle of it and hewed out a winepress as well. Then he waited for it to yield grapes, but it yielded only sour ones.
So now, you who live in Jerusalem, you people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.
What more could have been done for my vineyard that I did not do for it? Why, when I waited for it to yield grapes, did it yield only sour ones?
Now let me tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled.
I will make it a wasteland. It will not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns will grow up in it. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.
The vineyard of the LORD of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are the planting he delighted in. He waited for justice, but look—bloodshed; for righteousness, but listen—a cry of distress.
Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no space is left, and you are the only ones living in the land.
The LORD of Hosts has declared in my hearing: Surely the many houses will lie desolate, the great and fine ones left without a resident.
Ten acres of vineyard will produce only one bath of wine, and a homer of seed only an ephah of grain.
Woe to those who rise early in the morning to chase after strong drink, who linger into the night until wine inflames them.
They have harp and lyre, tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts, but they pay no attention to the work of the LORD and take no notice of what his hands have done.
Therefore my people will go into exile for lack of knowledge; their nobles will go hungry and their multitudes will be parched with thirst.
Therefore the grave has opened wide its throat and gaped with mouth beyond measure; down go the city's splendor and her multitude, her uproar and all who revel in her.
Humanity will be brought low, everyone humbled, and the eyes of the arrogant lowered.
But the LORD of Hosts will be exalted by his justice, and the holy God will show himself holy by his righteousness.
Then lambs will graze as in their own pasture, and among the ruins of the rich strangers will feed.
Woe to those who drag iniquity along with cords of falsehood and sin with cart ropes,
who say, "Let him hurry, let him speed his work along, so we may see it. Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come near and arrive, so we may know it."
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness into light and light into darkness, who make bitter sweet and sweet bitter.
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.
Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing strong drink,
who acquit the guilty for a bribe and deny justice to the one who is in the right.
Therefore, as fire consumes stubble and flame devours dry grass, so their root will rot and their blossom blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the LORD of Hosts and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel.
That is why the anger of the LORD burns against his people; he has raised his hand against them and struck them down. The mountains shook, and their corpses lay like refuse in the streets. Yet his anger is not turned away; his hand is still raised.
He lifts up a banner to the nations far away; he whistles for those at the ends of the earth. Here they come, swiftly and speedily!
Not one of them grows weary or stumbles; not one slumbers or sleeps. No belt is loosened at the waist, no sandal strap is broken.
Their arrows are sharpened, all their bows are strung; their horses' hooves are like flint, their chariot wheels like a whirlwind.
Their roar is like a lion's; they roar like young lions. They growl as they seize their prey and carry it off, and no one can rescue it.
On that day they will roar over it like the roaring of the sea. And if one looks at the land, there is only darkness and distress; even the light is darkened by clouds.
