MatthewMatt 1:18-25

18Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

19Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her publicly, he decided to divorce her quietly.

20But while he was considering this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:

23"Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"—which means "God with us."

24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took her home as his wife.

25But he had no relations with her until she gave birth to a son; and he named him Jesus.

26In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,

27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary.

28The angel came to her and said, "Greetings, you who are favored! The Lord is with you."

29She was deeply troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.

31You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus.

32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,

33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

34Mary said to the angel, "How will this be, since I have not been with a man?"

35The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

36And consider your relative Elizabeth: she too has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month.

37For nothing will be impossible with God."

38Then Mary said, "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me according to your word." And the angel left her.

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,
just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.
Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the start, it seemed good to me also to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the priestly division of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were well advanced in years.
Once, when his division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
And at the hour of the incense offering, the whole assembly of the people was praying outside.
When Zechariah saw him, he was shaken, and fear fell upon him.
But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to name him John.
He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth,
for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb.
He will turn many of the children of Israel back to the Lord their God.
And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
Zechariah said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years."
The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
Now listen: you will be silent, unable to speak, until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their appointed time."
Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.
When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained mute.
When his days of service were completed, he returned home.
After this his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself in seclusion, saying,
"This is what the Lord has done for me. In these days he has looked on me with favor and taken away my disgrace among the people."

In those days Mary set out and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
She cried out with a loud voice: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed is she who believed that what the Lord has said to her would be fulfilled."
And Mary said: "My soul magnifies the Lord,
for he has looked upon the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me — holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones and lifted up the humble.
He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful,
just as he promised our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever."
Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home.
When the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, she bore a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they rejoiced with her.
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah.
But his mother spoke up: "No! He is to be called John."
They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who has that name."
Then they made signs to his father to find out what he wanted to name him.
He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And everyone was amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God.
Awe came over all their neighbors, and throughout the hill country of Judea people talked about all these things.
Everyone who heard it took it to heart and asked, "What then will this child become?" For the hand of the Lord was with him.
His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited his people and brought them redemption.
as he said through the mouths of his holy prophets long ago —
salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,
to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant,
to grant us that we, rescued from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go on ahead of the Lord to prepare his ways,
to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,
to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."
And the child grew and became strong in spirit; he lived in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.
