This is what the LORD says: Go down to the house of the king of Judah and speak this word there.

Say: Hear the word of the LORD, king of Judah, you who sit on David's throne—you, your servants, and your people who come through these gates.

This is what the LORD says: Do justice and righteousness. Rescue the one who has been robbed from the hand of his oppressor. Do not wrong or violate the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.

For if you truly do what I have said, then kings who sit on David's throne will come riding through the gates of this house in chariots and on horses—each king with his servants and his people.

But if you will not listen to these words, I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that this house will become a ruin.

For this is what the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah: You are like Gilead to me, like the summit of Lebanon—yet I will surely make you a wasteland, cities without inhabitants.

I will appoint destroyers against you, each with his weapons; they will cut down your finest cedars and throw them on the fire.

Many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, "Why has the LORD done this to such a great city?"

And they will answer: "Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD their God and bowed down to other gods and served them."

Do not weep for the dead or mourn for him. Weep bitterly for the one who goes away, for he will never return to see the land of his birth.

For this is what the LORD says about Shallum son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned in place of his father Josiah: He has gone out from this place and will never return.

He will die in the place where they have taken him captive; he will never see this land again.

Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbor work for nothing and does not pay him his wages,

who says, "I will build myself a spacious house with airy upper rooms," who cuts out windows for it, panels it with cedar, and paints it red with vermilion.

Do you think you are a king because you compete in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, and also do justice and righteousness? Then all went well for him.

He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and it went well for him. Is that not what it means to know me? declares the LORD.

But your eyes and your heart are set on nothing but your own gain—on shedding innocent blood, on oppression and violence.

Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: They will not mourn for him, crying, "Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!" They will not mourn for him, crying, "Alas, my lord! Alas, his majesty!"

He will have the burial of a donkey—dragged away and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

Go up to Lebanon and cry out; raise your voice in Bashan; cry out from Abarim, for all your lovers are crushed.

I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, "I will not listen." This has been your way since your youth: you have never obeyed my voice.

The wind will shepherd away all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Then you will be ashamed and humiliated because of all your wickedness.

You who dwell in Lebanon, nested among the cedars: how you will groan when the pains come upon you, anguish like a woman in labor!

As surely as I live, declares the LORD, even if Coniah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were a signet ring on my right hand, I would tear you off.

I will hand you over to those who seek your life, to those you dread—to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Chaldeans.

I will hurl you and the mother who bore you into another land, where neither of you was born, and there you will die.

To the land they long with all their heart to return to, they will never return.

Is this man Coniah a broken pot, despised and shattered, a vessel no one wants? Why are he and his children hurled out and cast into a land they do not know?

O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD!

This is what the LORD says: Record this man as childless, a man who will not prosper in his days; for none of his offspring will succeed in sitting on David's throne or ruling again in Judah.

People

Josiah (vv. 10–11, 15–16) was Judah’s reforming king who fell in battle at Megiddo in 609 B.C.E. against Pharaoh Neco II of Egypt. The chapter contrasts his righteous rule with the injustice of his sons.

Shallum/Jehoahaz (vv. 11–12) was Josiah’s youngest son, who reigned for only three months in 609 B.C.E. before Neco II took him to Egypt, where he died in captivity. "Shallum" was his birth name, while "Jehoahaz" was his throne name. He was the first of Judah’s kings to die in exile.

Jehoiakim (vv. 13–19) reigned from 609 to 598 B.C.E. and was installed by Pharaoh Neco II after Jehoahaz was deposed. He was notorious for his lavish building program, funded through forced labor and oppression. Babylonian chronicles confirm his vassal status under Nebuchadnezzar, and archaeological discoveries at Ramat Rahel have uncovered a magnificent palace from this period that may correspond to the one Jeremiah criticizes.

Coniah/Jehoiachin (vv. 24–30) reigned for only three months in 598/597 B.C.E. before Nebuchadnezzar deported him to Babylon along with his mother, Nehushta. Babylonian administrative texts from Babylon mention "Yaukin, king of Judah" and confirm that he received rations from the Babylonian court—a remarkable archaeological finding that corroborates the biblical account.

Places

Lebanon (vv. 6, 20, 23) is used as a symbol for the extravagant royal palace because cedar trees were imported from there. The image of "dwelling in Lebanon" and being "enthroned among cedars" (v. 23) alludes to the palace’s opulent cedar interior, a luxury item requiring significant resources to obtain.

Gilead and the summit of Lebanon (v. 6) were known as fertile and forested regions. The comparison emphasizes that although the royal family now lives in abundance, God will turn them into a desert.

Bashan and Abarim (v. 20) are mountainous areas east and southeast of the Jordan. The call to cry out from these heights symbolizes an all-encompassing lament meant to be heard throughout the land.

Events and Customs

Forced labor (v. 13) without payment was forbidden under Israelite law (Exod 20:13; Deut 24:14–15). Jehoiakim’s practice violated both the Mosaic Law and the social contract between king and people that was foundational to the Israelite understanding of kingship.

Signet ring (חוֹתָם, "hotam," v. 24) was the most important symbol of royal authority, used to seal official documents. That God would tear off even this signet ring from his right hand illustrates the completeness of Coniah’s rejection and that of his lineage.

Ariiri (עֲרִירִי, "childless," v. 30) does not mean that Coniah had no children (he had sons), but rather that none of them would "succeed" in sitting on David’s throne—a dynastic curse fulfilled in history.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Babylonian administrative texts, known as the "Jehoiachin Rations" or Weidner tablets, are clay tablets from around 592 B.C.E. discovered in Babylon. They list rations of oil and barley for "Yaukin, king of Judah" and his five sons. This directly confirms Jeremiah’s prophecy concerning Coniah’s exile and provides rare extra-biblical testimony to the fate of a Judean king.

At Ramat Rahel, south of Jerusalem, archaeologists have uncovered an opulent palace from the 7th and 6th centuries B.C.E., featuring refined architectural details. Some scholars suggest this may be Jehoiakim’s palace, criticized in vv. 13–14 for its costly cedar wood and red paint.
