Then Job answered:

"What help you have given to the powerless! What mighty deliverance for the arm without strength!

What counsel you have offered to one without wisdom! And what abundance of insight you have displayed!

With whose help have you spoken these words? And whose breath was it that came out of you?

The shades below writhe in terror—the waters and all who dwell in them.

Sheol lies naked before him, and Destruction has no covering.

He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth upon nothing.

He binds up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst beneath their weight.

He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his cloud across it.

He has drawn a circle on the face of the waters, at the boundary between light and darkness.

The pillars of heaven shudder, astonished at his rebuke.

By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab.

By his breath the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent.

And these are but the fringes of his ways—only a whisper of a word do we hear of him. Who then could comprehend the thunder of his mighty deeds?

Sheol and Abaddon (שְׁאוֹל / אֲבַדּוֹן)

Verse 6 mentions both Sheol (the realm of the dead) and Abaddon (destruction/ruin). These two Hebrew terms describe the underworld from different angles: Sheol denotes the dwelling place of the dead, while Abaddon (from the root 'bd, "to perish") emphasizes the aspect of destruction. That these places are "naked" before God means that nothing is hidden from Him—even the realm of the dead is open to His gaze.

Rahab (רָהַב)

In verse 12, Rahab is mentioned, a mythical sea monster symbolizing chaotic forces.
