All this my eye has seen; my ear has heard and understood it.

What you know, I know as well; I am not inferior to you.

But I would speak to the Almighty; I want to argue my case with God.

You, however, are plasterers of lies; every one of you is a worthless healer.

If only you would keep completely silent! That would be your wisdom.

Hear now my argument; listen to the pleading of my lips.

Will you speak falsely on God's behalf? Will you tell lies for him?

Will you show him partiality? Will you argue the case for God?

Would it go well when he examines you? Can you deceive him as one deceives a man?

He would surely rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality.

Would not his majesty terrify you, and the dread of him fall upon you?

Your maxims are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are walls of clay.

Be silent and let me speak; then let come upon me what may.

Why should I take my flesh in my teeth and hold my life in my hands?

Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; still I will argue my case to his face.

This itself will be my salvation, for no godless man may come before him.

Listen carefully to my words; let my declaration reach your ears.

See, I have prepared my case; I know that I will be vindicated.

Who is there to contend with me? If there is, then let me be silent and die.

Only two things do not do to me, and then I will not hide from your face:

Withdraw your hand from me, and do not let your terror frighten me.

Then summon me, and I will answer; or let me speak, and you reply to me.

How many are my iniquities and sins? Show me my offense and my sin.

Why do you hide your face and treat me as your enemy?

Would you terrify a windblown leaf? Would you chase after dry stubble?

For you write down bitter charges against me and make me inherit the sins of my youth.

You put my feet in the stocks and watch all my paths; you mark the very soles of my feet.

So man wastes away like something rotten, like a garment eaten by moths.
