Then Elihu continued and said:
Do you think this is justice, when you say, "I am in the right, not God"?
For you ask, "What good does it do me? What do I gain by not sinning?"* [*Or "What advantage is it to you?"—the Hebrew has "to you," which may address God.]
I will answer you—you and your friends with you.
Look up at the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds so high above you.
If you sin, how does that harm him? If your offenses pile up, what does it do to him?
If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive from your hand?
Your wickedness affects only a man like yourself, and your righteousness only a human being.
People cry out under the weight of oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the mighty.
But no one asks, "Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night,
who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the sky?"
There they cry out, but he gives no answer, because of the arrogance of the wicked.
Surely God does not listen to empty talk; the Almighty pays it no regard.
How much less, then, when you say he takes no notice! Yet your case lies before him—so wait for him.
And now, because his anger has not brought punishment, and he takes little note of wrongdoing,
Job opens his mouth with empty words and multiplies talk without knowledge.
