The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:
Judah mourns, her gates languish; they sink to the ground in mourning, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.
The nobles send their young men for water; they come to the cisterns and find none. They return with their vessels empty, ashamed and disgraced, their heads covered.
The ground is cracked, for there has been no rain in the land. The farmers are ashamed; they cover their heads.
Even the doe in the field gives birth and abandons her young, because there is no grass.
Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights and pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail, for there is no vegetation.
Though our sins testify against us, act, O LORD, for the sake of your name. Our rebellions are many; against you we have sinned.
O Hope of Israel, its Savior in time of trouble, why are you like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who stops only for the night?
Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior who cannot save? Yet you are among us, O LORD, and we bear your name. Do not abandon us!
This is what the LORD says about this people: They love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. So the LORD does not accept them; now he will remember their guilt and punish their sins.
Then the LORD said to me: Do not pray for the welfare of this people.
Even if they fast, I will not listen to their cry; even if they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will make an end of them by sword, famine, and plague.
Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD, look: the prophets keep telling them, 'You will not see the sword, and famine will not come upon you; I will give you lasting peace in this place.'"
And the LORD said to me: The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, I did not commission them, I did not speak to them. What they prophesy to you are lying visions, worthless divinations, and the delusions of their own minds.
Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in my name though I did not send them, and who say, "No sword or famine will touch this land": by sword and famine those very prophets will meet their end.
And the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with no one to bury them—they, their wives, their sons and their daughters. For I will pour out on them the evil they deserve.
Speak this word to them: Let my eyes stream with tears night and day, without ceasing, for the virgin daughter of my people has suffered a crushing blow, a devastating wound.
If I go out into the country, there lie those slain by the sword; if I enter the city, there are the ravages of famine. Both prophet and priest have gone off to a land they do not know.
Have you rejected Judah completely? Do you loathe Zion? Why have you struck us so that we cannot be healed? We hoped for peace, but no good has come; we hoped for a time of healing, but there is only terror.
We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, and the guilt of our fathers; we have sinned against you.
For the sake of your name, do not despise us; do not dishonor your glorious throne. Remember your covenant with us, and do not break it.
Can the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Can the skies by themselves send showers? No, it is you, O LORD our God. So we put our hope in you, for you are the one who does all this.
