Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, declares the LORD.
Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says against the shepherds who tend my people: You have scattered my flock and driven them away, and you have not cared for them. So now I will deal with you for the evil of your deeds, declares the LORD.
I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply.
I will raise up shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, and not one of them will be missing, declares the LORD.
Look, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch. He will reign as king and act wisely, and he will do what is just and right in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
Therefore, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when people will no longer say, "As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt,"
but rather, "As surely as the LORD lives, who brought up and led back the offspring of the house of Israel out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where he had driven them." Then they will live on their own soil.
Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me; all my bones tremble. I am like a drunken man, like one overcome with wine, because of the LORD and because of his holy words.
For the land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land mourns, and the pastures of the wilderness are withered. They run to do evil, and their strength is used for what is wrong.
Both prophet and priest are godless; even in my own house I have found their wickedness, declares the LORD.
Therefore their way will be like slippery ground in the dark; they will be driven on and fall in it. For I will bring disaster upon them in the year of their reckoning, declares the LORD.
Among the prophets of Samaria I have seen something offensive: they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray.
And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: they commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. To me they have all become like Sodom, and the people of Jerusalem like Gomorrah.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says concerning the prophets: I will feed them bitter wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem godlessness has spread through the whole land.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They are filling you with empty hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.
They keep saying to those who despise me, "The LORD says: You will have peace," and to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, "No harm will come to you."
But who has stood in the council of the LORD to see and hear his word? Who has paid attention to his word and truly heard it?
See, the storm of the LORD breaks out in fury, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the heads of the wicked.
The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he has carried out and fulfilled the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly.
I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message. I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.
But if they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people and turned them from their evil way and from their evil deeds.
Am I a God who is only near, declares the LORD, and not a God far away?
Can anyone hide in secret places where I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill both heaven and earth? declares the LORD.
I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name, claiming, "I had a dream! I had a dream!"
How long will this go on in the hearts of these prophets who prophesy lies, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds?
They intend to make my people forget my name by the dreams they tell one another, just as their ancestors forgot my name for the sake of Baal.
Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw to do with grain? declares the LORD.
Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that shatters rock?
So I am against the prophets, declares the LORD, who steal my words from one another.
Yes, I am against the prophets, declares the LORD, who wag their own tongues and then say, "The LORD declares."
I am against those who prophesy false dreams, declares the LORD. They tell them and lead my people astray with their lies and reckless boasting, though I never sent them or commanded them. They are no help at all to this people, declares the LORD.
When this people, or a prophet or a priest, asks you, "What is the burden of the LORD?" say to them, "You are the burden! And I will cast you off, declares the LORD." [Footnote: The Hebrew word rendered "burden" also means "oracle," so the question means "What message has the LORD given?" The traditional Hebrew text of the reply reads "What burden?"; ancient versions read "You are the burden."]
As for the prophet or the priest or anyone among the people who says, "This is the burden of the LORD"—I will punish that man and his household.
Instead, each of you is to say to your neighbor and to your brother: "What has the LORD answered? What has the LORD spoken?"
But you must no longer speak of "the burden of the LORD," for each man's own word becomes his burden, and so you twist the words of the living God, the LORD of Hosts, our God.
This is what you are to say to a prophet: "What has the LORD answered you? What has the LORD spoken?"
But if you say, "the burden of the LORD," then this is what the LORD says: Because you keep using these words, "the burden of the LORD," though I sent you word not to say it,
therefore, behold, I will surely lift you up and cast you away from my presence, along with the city I gave to you and to your ancestors.
And I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace and everlasting shame that will never be forgotten.
