Standardausgabe When this people, or a prophet or a priest, asks you, "What is the burden of the LORD?" say to them, "You are the burden! And I will cast you off, declares the LORD." [Footnote: The Hebrew word rendered "burden" also means "oracle," so the question means "What message has the LORD given?" The traditional Hebrew text of the reply reads "What burden?"; ancient versions read "You are the burden."]
When this people, or a prophet or a priest, asks you, "What is the burden of the LORD?" say to them, "You are the burden! And I will cast you off, declares the LORD." The verse turns entirely on a wordplay invisible in English, and the reply follows a reading that differs from the traditional Hebrew text. A brief footnote explaining both would help the reader without altering the translation.
