At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard that Hezekiah had been ill and had recovered.

Hezekiah welcomed the envoys gladly and showed them his treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, the fine oil, his whole armory, and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.

Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and asked him, "What did these men say, and where did they come from?" Hezekiah answered, "They came to me from a distant land, from Babylon."

"What did they see in your palace?" Isaiah asked. "They saw everything in my palace," Hezekiah said. "There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them."

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD of hosts:

"Look, the days are coming when everything in your palace, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.

And some of your own sons, your own flesh and blood, whom you will father, will be taken away to serve as eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon." [Footnote: The Hebrew word can also mean court officials or royal stewards.]

Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good." For he thought, "There will be peace and security in my lifetime."

Merodach-Baladan (Hebrew: מְרֹדַךְ בַּלְאֲדָן) was a Chaldean king who ruled over Babylon during two periods: approximately 722–710 B.C. and again briefly in 703 B.C. His name means "Marduk has given a son" and is well attested in Assyrian sources, where he is called "Marduk-apla-iddina II." He was a persistent rebel against Assyrian dominance and actively sought alliances with other nations to resist Assyria. The delegation sent to Hezekiah, ostensibly to congratulate him on his recovery, likely had a deeper diplomatic purpose: to explore the possibilities of an anti-Assyrian alliance. Assyrian annals from Sennacherib describe repeated campaigns against Merodach-Baladan.

Hezekiah appears here in a different role than in the preceding chapters. While chapters 36–38 portray him as a faithful king who seeks the Lord in crisis, chapter 39 reveals his vulnerability to pride and political shortsightedness.

Babylon (בָּבֶל) was at this time a city in rebellion against Assyrian control, not yet the dominant superpower it would later become.
