Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah in crimson-stained garments? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? "It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save."
Why are your clothes red, your garments like one who treads the winepress?
"I have trodden the winepress alone; from the peoples no one was with me. I trod them down in my anger and trampled them in my wrath; their lifeblood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing.
For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redemption had come.
I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled that no one gave support. So my own arm brought me victory, and my own wrath sustained me.
I trampled the peoples in my anger; in my wrath I made them drunk and poured out their lifeblood on the ground."
I will recount the steadfast love of the LORD, the praises of the LORD, for all that the LORD has done for us—the great goodness he has shown the house of Israel, according to his compassion and his abundant steadfast love.
He said, "Surely they are my people, children who will not act falsely." And he became their Savior.
In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy, and he himself fought against them.
Then his people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses: Where is he who brought them up out of the sea, with the shepherds of his flock? Where is he who set his Holy Spirit among them,
who sent his glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to make for himself an everlasting name,
who led them through the depths? Like a horse in the wilderness, they did not stumble;
like cattle going down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. So you led your people, to make for yourself a glorious name.
Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and glorious dwelling. Where are your zeal and your might? The stirring of your heart and your compassion are held back from me.
Yet you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, LORD, are our Father; our Redeemer from of old is your name.
Why, LORD, do you let us wander from your ways and harden our hearts so we do not fear you? Return, for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance.
For a little while your holy people held possession; now our enemies have trampled down your sanctuary.
We have become like those you have never ruled, like those never called by your name. Oh, that you would tear open the heavens and come down, that the mountains would quake before you!
