53When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.

54Coming to his hometown, he taught the people in their synagogue, and they were astonished. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked.

55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?

56Aren't all his sisters here with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"

57And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household."

58And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.

1Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astounded. "Where did this man get all this?" they said. "What is this wisdom given to him? And such miracles worked by his hands?

3Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house."

5And he could do no miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

6He was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around the surrounding villages, teaching.

16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom, and stood up to read.

17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and unrolling it he found the place where it was written:

18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are crushed,

19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him.

21He began to speak to them: "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

22They all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that came from his mouth. And they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

23So he said to them, "No doubt you will quote me this proverb: 'Doctor, heal yourself.' You will say, 'Do here in your hometown what we have heard you did in Capernaum.'

24Truly I tell you," he went on, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

25In truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three years and six months and a severe famine came over the whole land.

26Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.

27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian."

28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was filled with rage.

29They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, intending to throw him off the cliff.

30But he walked right through the middle of them and went on his way.

Matthew and Luke record the three temptations, but in a different order. Mark only mentions that Jesus was tempted.

1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was famished.

3The tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

4But he answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

5Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the temple.

6"If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"

7Jesus said to him, "It is also written: 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

8Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

9"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will fall down and worship me."

10Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written: 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"

11Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and began to attend to him.

12At once the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness.

13He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels served him.

9Then he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.

10For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,'

11and, 'On their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"

12Jesus answered him, "It is said: 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and he was teaching the people there on the Sabbath days.
They were amazed at his teaching, because his word carried authority.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out at the top of his voice,
"Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked him: "Be silent, and come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them all and came out of him without doing him any harm.
Astonishment came over them all, and they said to one another, "What kind of message is this? With authority and power he gives orders to the unclean spirits, and out they come!"
Leaving the synagogue, he went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him to help her.
He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to serve them.
At sunset, all who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on each one of them and healed them.
Demons also came out of many, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not let them speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
At daybreak he left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they found him they tried to keep him from leaving.
But he said to them, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent."
And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.[^1] [^1]: Some manuscripts read "of Galilee."
