Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his mercy endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so—those he redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
those he gathered out of the lands, from east and west, from north and from the sea.
Some wandered in the wilderness, in a wasteland with no road, and found no city to live in.
They were hungry and thirsty; their strength was failing within them.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress.
He led them by a straight road until they came to a city where they could settle.
Let them thank the LORD for his mercy, for his wonders toward the children of men.
For he satisfies the thirsty soul, and fills the hungry soul with good things.
Some sat in darkness and the shadow of death, prisoners in misery and irons,
because they had rebelled against the words of God and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they stumbled, and no one helped.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their chains apart.
Let them thank the LORD for his mercy, for his wonders toward the children of men.
For he shattered the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.
Some were fools who took the road of rebellion and suffered for their sins.
They loathed every kind of food, and they came to the gates of death.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them, and rescued them from their destruction.
Let them thank the LORD for his mercy, for his wonders toward the children of men.
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and tell of his works with songs of joy.
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters.
They saw the works of the LORD, his wonders in the deep.
He spoke, and a stormwind rose up, and it lifted the waves high.
They rose up to the heavens, they sank down to the depths; their courage melted away in the danger.
They staggered and reeled like drunken men, and all their skill was useless.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves grew quiet.
They rejoiced at the calm, and he guided them to the harbor they longed for.
Let them thank the LORD for his mercy, for his wonders toward the children of men.
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.
He turns rivers into desert, springs of water into parched ground,
fruitful land into salt flats, because of the wickedness of those who live there.
He turns desert into pools of water, and dry land into flowing springs.
There he settles the hungry, and they establish a city to live in.
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
He blesses them, and they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock dwindle.
When they grow few and are brought low by oppression, disaster, and sorrow,
He pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in a trackless waste.
But he lifts the needy out of their affliction and makes their families flourish like flocks.
The upright see it and rejoice, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.
Whoever is wise, let him take these things to heart and consider the mercies of the LORD.
