Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but appeal to him as you would to a father, to younger men as brothers,

to older women as mothers, to younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

Honor widows who are truly widows.

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn first of all to show devotion to their own household and to repay what they owe their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing in God's sight.

The woman who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God, and she devotes herself night and day to petitions and prayers.

But the one who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.

Give these instructions as well, so that they may be above reproach.

Whoever does not provide for his own, and especially for the members of his household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

No widow is to be put on the list unless she is at least sixty years old and has been faithful to her husband,

and is well known for her good works: that she has raised children, shown hospitality to strangers, washed the feet of the saints, helped those in distress, and devoted herself to every good work.

But do not enroll younger widows, for when their passions get the better of their devotion to Christ, they want to marry again,

and so they bring judgment on themselves, because they have set aside their first pledge.

Besides that, they learn to be idle, going from house to house — and not only idle, but gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.

So I want the younger widows to marry, to bear children, to manage their households, and to give the adversary no occasion for slander.

For some have already turned aside to follow Satan.

If any believing woman has widows in her family, she should help them, so that the church is not burdened and can help those who are truly widows.

The elders who lead well are worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

For the Scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it is threshing," and, "The worker deserves his wages."

Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is confirmed by two or three witnesses.

As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in front of everyone, so that the rest may stand in fear.

In the presence of God and Christ Jesus and the chosen angels, I charge you to keep these instructions without prejudice, doing nothing out of favoritism.

Do not be hasty in laying hands on anyone, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

Stop drinking only water; use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

The sins of some people are obvious, going ahead of them to judgment; the sins of others follow after them.

So too good works are plain to see, and even those that are not cannot stay hidden.

Care for Widows in Antiquity

This chapter deals largely with the organization of care for widows, reflecting a critical social challenge in the Greco-Roman world. Widows without male relatives who could support them often found themselves in a very vulnerable position. Without inheritance rights in many cases and with limited access to work, they depended on family networks or charity. The Jewish tradition had already established care for widows as a religious duty (Deut 14:29; 24:19-21), and the early church adopted and further developed this practice. Acts 6:1 shows that distribution to widows was an early challenge in the congregation.

Formal Registration of Widows

The expression katalegesthō ("let her be enrolled", v. 9) suggests that the congregation had a formal arrangement for registering widows who received support. This was not merely charity but likely also involved commitments to prayer and service for the church. The criteria mentioned – at least sixty years old, married only once, known for good deeds – show that this was an recognized position with clear admission requirements, not unlike later orders of deaconesses.

Foot Washing as a Sign of Hospitality

The requirement that a widow should have "washed the feet of the saints" (v. 10) refers to an important custom in the ancient world. Due to dusty roads and the use of sandals, foot washing upon arrival at a home was necessary. Normally slaves or servants performed this task. For a host to perform the foot washing personally was a sign of exceptional hospitality and humility. Jesus used this custom as an example for servant leadership (John 13:1-17).
