The word the LORD spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, through Jeremiah the prophet:
Announce it among the nations, proclaim it, raise a signal! Proclaim it, hold nothing back! Say: Babylon is captured, Bel is put to shame, Marduk is shattered. Her images are put to shame, her idols are shattered.
For a nation has come up against her from the north; it will make her land a wasteland, and no one will live there. Both people and animals have fled, they are gone.
In those days and at that time, declares the LORD, the people of Israel will come, they and the people of Judah together. They will go on their way weeping, and they will seek the LORD their God.
They will ask the way to Zion, their faces turned toward it: "Come, let us join ourselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten."
My people were lost sheep. Their shepherds led them astray, turning them loose on the mountains. They wandered from mountain to hill and forgot their resting place.
All who found them devoured them, and their enemies said, "We are not guilty, for they sinned against the LORD, their righteous pasture, the LORD, the hope of their fathers."
Flee from the midst of Babylon, go out from the land of the Chaldeans, and be like he-goats leading the flock.
For look, I am stirring up and bringing against Babylon a company of great nations from the land of the north. They will line up against her, and from there she will be taken. Their arrows are like a skilled warrior's; none returns empty.
Chaldea will be plundered; all who plunder her will have their fill, declares the LORD.
Though you rejoice, though you exult, you who plunder my inheritance; though you frisk like a heifer treading grain and neigh like stallions—
your mother will be utterly disgraced, she who bore you will be humiliated. Look, she will be the last of the nations: a wilderness, a parched land, a desert.
Because of the LORD's wrath she will not be inhabited; she will lie utterly desolate. All who pass by Babylon will be appalled and will hiss at all her wounds.
Line up against Babylon on every side, all you who bend the bow. Shoot at her, spare no arrow, for she has sinned against the LORD.
Raise the shout against her on every side! She surrenders; her bulwarks have fallen, her walls are torn down. Since this is the LORD's vengeance, take vengeance on her; do to her as she has done.
Cut off from Babylon the sower and the one who wields the sickle at harvest. Before the sword of the oppressor each will turn back to his own people, each will flee to his own land.
Israel is a scattered flock driven away by lions. First the king of Assyria devoured him; then this last one, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, crushed his bones.
Therefore this is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am about to punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I punished the king of Assyria.
I will bring Israel back to his pasture, and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan; his hunger will be satisfied in the hill country of Ephraim and in Gilead.
In those days and at that time, declares the LORD, Israel's guilt will be sought, and there will be none; and Judah's sins, and they will not be found; for I will forgive the remnant I spare.
Go up against the land of Merathaim, and against those who live in Pekod. Pursue, kill, and devote them to destruction, declares the LORD; do everything I have commanded you.
The noise of battle is in the land, and great destruction!
How the hammer of the whole earth is cut down and broken! How Babylon has become a horror among the nations!
I set a snare for you, Babylon, and you were caught before you knew it. You were found and seized, because you defied the LORD.
The LORD has opened his armory and brought out the weapons of his wrath, for the Lord GOD of hosts has work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.
Come against her from every quarter; break open her granaries. Pile her up like heaps of grain and devote her to destruction; let nothing be left of her.
Kill all her young bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them, for their day has come, the time of their punishment!
Listen—fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon, announcing in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance for his temple.
Summon archers against Babylon, all who bend the bow. Encamp around her on every side; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; do to her as she has done. For she has been arrogant against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day, declares the LORD.
Look, I am against you, O arrogant one, declares the Lord GOD of hosts, for your day has come, the time when I punish you.
The arrogant one will stumble and fall, and no one will lift him up. I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour everything around him.
This is what the LORD of hosts says: The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah with them. All their captors hold them fast; they refuse to let them go.
But their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name. He will surely plead their cause, so that he may bring rest to the earth, but unrest to those who live in Babylon.
A sword against the Chaldeans, declares the LORD, and against those who live in Babylon, against her officials and her wise men!
A sword against her diviners, and they will become fools! A sword against her warriors, and they will be terrified!
A sword against her horses and chariots and all the foreign troops in her midst, and they will become like women! A sword against her treasures, and they will be plundered!
A drought against her waters, and they will dry up! For it is a land of idols, and they go mad over their dreadful images.
Therefore desert creatures and hyenas will live there, and there the ostriches will dwell. Never again will it be inhabited, nor will it be settled through all generations.
As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah along with their neighbors, declares the LORD, so no one will live there; no human being will settle in her.
Look, a people is coming from the north; a great nation and many kings are stirring from the ends of the earth.
They grip bow and javelin; they are cruel and show no mercy. Their sound roars like the sea as they ride on horses, arrayed as one man for battle against you, Daughter Babylon.
The king of Babylon has heard the report of them, and his hands hang limp. Anguish grips him, pain like a woman in labor.
Look, like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan to a lasting pasture, in an instant I will chase them away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who can summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?
Therefore hear the plan the LORD has made against Babylon, the purposes he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the little ones of the flock will be dragged away; surely their pasture will be made desolate.
At the sound of Babylon's capture the earth will quake; her cry will be heard among the nations.
