When Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
and to the kings in the north—in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Kinneroth, in the lowlands, and in the heights of Dor to the west,
to the Canaanites in the east and the west, to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill country, and to the Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
They marched out with all their armies, a vast host, as numerous as the sand on the seashore, with a great many horses and chariots.
The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give them all up, slain before Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."
So Joshua and all his fighting men came upon them suddenly at the waters of Merom and fell upon them.
The LORD gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them as far as Greater Sidon, as far as Misrephoth Maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down until no survivor was left.
At that time Joshua turned back, captured Hazor, and put its king to the sword, for Hazor had formerly been the head of all these kingdoms.
They struck down every person in it with the sword, devoting them to destruction; nothing that breathed was left alive. And Hazor he burned with fire.
Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, along with their kings, and put them to the sword. He devoted them to destruction, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.
But Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds—only Hazor did Joshua burn.
The Israelites took all the spoil of these cities and the livestock as their own plunder, but they put every person to the sword until they had destroyed them; they left nothing alive that breathed.
As the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
So Joshua took all that land: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowlands, the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its lowlands—
from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings, struck them down, and put them to death.
Not one city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who lived in Gibeon; all the rest they took in battle.
For it was the LORD's doing to harden their hearts, so that they came against Israel in battle, in order that they might be devoted to destruction and receive no mercy, but be wiped out, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
At that time Joshua went and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction along with their cities.
So Joshua took the whole land, just as the LORD had told Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the allotments of their tribes. And the land had rest from war.
