When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the road to Atharim, he attacked Israel and took some of them captive.

Then Israel made a vow to the LORD: "If you will deliver this people into our hands, we will utterly destroy their cities."

The LORD listened to Israel's plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They destroyed them and their cities, and the place was named Hormah.

They set out from Mount Hor along the road toward the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. But on the way the people grew impatient,

and they spoke against God and against Moses: "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread and no water, and we are sick of this miserable food!"

So the LORD sent venomous snakes among the people, and they bit them, and many Israelites died.

The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD to take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people.

The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and mount it on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live."

So Moses made a bronze snake and mounted it on a pole. Then whenever anyone was bitten by a snake, he looked at the bronze snake and lived.

The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth.

They set out from Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab toward the sunrise.

From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley.

From there they moved on and camped beyond the Arnon, in the wilderness that stretches out from the territory of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

That is why the Book of the Wars of the LORD says: "Waheb in Suphah and the ravines, the Arnon,

and the slopes of the ravines that run down to the site of Ar and lean toward the border of Moab."

From there they went on to Beer, the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Gather the people together, and I will give them water."

Then Israel sang this song: "Rise up, O well! Sing to it!

The well that the princes dug, that the nobles of the people sank with the scepter, with their staffs." From the wilderness they went on to Mattanah,

from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

and from Bamoth to the valley in the region of Moab, where the top of Pisgah looks out over the wasteland.

Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites with this word:

"Let us pass through your land. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, nor drink water from any well. We will travel along the King's Highway until we have passed through your territory."

But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his whole army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel.

Israel put him to the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly held.

Israel captured all these towns and settled in all the cities of the Amorites, including Heshbon and its surrounding villages.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.

That is why the poets say: "Come to Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let Sihon's city be restored.

Fire went out from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the rulers of Arnon's heights.

Woe to you, Moab! You are destroyed, people of Chemosh! He gave up his sons as fugitives and his daughters as captives to Sihon king of the Amorites.

But we have overthrown them; Heshbon is destroyed all the way to Dibon. We laid them waste as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba."

So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.

After Moses had sent men to spy out Jazer, the Israelites captured its surrounding villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.

Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out with his whole army to meet them in battle at Edrei.

The LORD said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your hand, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon."

So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving him no survivor, and they took possession of his land.

People

The King of Arad was a Canaanite ruler in the Negev region. Arad is well documented archaeologically, with a significant Canaanite city from the Early Bronze Age. His attack on Israel represents the first confrontation with the inhabitants of Canaan after the spies were sent out a generation earlier.

Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruled from Heshbon and had previously conquered substantial Moabite territories north of the Arnon River. He was a powerful regional ruler whose kingdom extended from the Arnon to the Jabbok. His refusal of passage and subsequent defeat became a paradigmatic example in Israelite tradition (referred to repeatedly in Psalms 135–136, Deuteronomy).

Og, king of Bashan, was known as one of the last "Rephaim" – a people associated with giants in Canaanite tradition. His capital, Edrei (modern Der'a in Syria), was strategically important. Bashan was famous for its fertile oak trees and fat cattle.

Places

Arad is located in the eastern Negev, about 30 km northeast of Be'er-Sheva. Archaeological excavations have uncovered both a Canaanite city from the Early Bronze Age and a later Israelite fortress. Tell Arad shows clear destruction layers that may correspond to biblical accounts.

Mount Hor, where Aaron died (Numbers 20:22–29), was the starting point for the detour around Edom described in this chapter (v. 4). Traditionally identified with Jebel Harun near Petra, although some scholars suggest Jebel Madeirah further north.

The Arnon Valley (modern Wadi Mujib in Jordan) is a dramatic gorge that cuts down to the Dead Sea. It served as a natural boundary between Moab in the south and Amorite/Israelite territory in the north. The valley is approximately 3 km wide and up to 500 meters deep – an formidable geographical barrier.

Heshbon (modern Hesban in Jordan) was Sihon's capital. Archaeological excavations have found settlement traces from the Bronze Age, although the most significant finds are from the Iron Age and later periods.

Events and Customs

The Herem Vow (vv. 2–3): Israel made a vow to "devote [cities] to destruction" (הַחֲרַמְתִּי, haḥaramti) the Canaanite cities. This meant total destruction as a religious act – no plunder or survivors were to be taken; instead, everything was dedicated to the Lord through annihilation. The place name Horma (חָרְמָה) preserves the memory of this vow.

The Bronze Serpent (vv. 8–9): The making of a serpent on a pole has parallels in surrounding cultures. In Egypt, the uraeus serpent was a protective symbol, and bronze serpents have been found in Egyptian temples in the Timna area (see "Chapter-Specific Finds"). The Hebrew wordplay between נָחָשׁ (naḥash, serpent) and נְחֹשֶׁת (neḥoshet, copper/bronze) is literarily significant. This serpent later became an object of idolatry and was destroyed by King Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:4).

The Song of the Well (vv. 17–18) is one of the oldest poetic fragments in the Bible. It celebrates a well dug by "princes" and "nobles" with their staffs – possibly a ritual act where leaders symbolically dedicated the water source. Such well songs are known from Bedouin culture in the Middle East up to modern times.

Key Terms

שָׂרָף (saraf, vv. 6, 8): The word means "burning" and describes the serpents that caused burning pain through their bites. The same root is used for seraphim in Isaiah 6. The Negev desert has several venomous snake species, including sand vipers and horned vipers, whose venom causes intense burning pain and tissue necrosis.

נֵס (nes, vv. 8–9): Translated as "pole" or "banner," it refers to a high pole visible from a distance. The same word is used for military standards and signal poles.

הַמֹּשְׁלִים (hammoshlim, v. 27): "Those who utter proverbs/songs." This refers to professional poets or singers who preserved and performed poetic compositions about historical events.

דֶּרֶךְ הַמֶּלֶךְ (derekh hammelekh, v. 22): The "King's Highway" was an established trade route running north-south through Transjordan. It was a major international thoroughfare from the Gulf of Aqaba to Damascus.

Chapter-Specific Finds

Bronze Serpents from Timna: In the Egyptian Hathor temple at the Timna mines (northern Negev), a gilded bronze serpent from the Late Bronze Age has been found, precisely from the period when the Israelites wandered in this area. This shows that serpent symbolism was widespread in the region and provides archaeological context for the account of the bronze serpent.

The Reference to "The Book of the Wars of the Lord" (v. 14): This quotation from an otherwise unknown collection called "The Book of the Wars of the Lord" (סֵפֶר מִלְחֲמֹת יְהוָה) testifies that early Israelite literary collections existed which have not been preserved. The fragmentary quote suggests epic war poetry celebrating the Lord's intervention in Israel's battles.

The Heshbon Poem (vv. 27–30): This victory poem about the conquest of Heshbon from Moab is likely an ancient Amorite victory song that the Israelites adopted. Ironically, the poem that originally celebrated Sihon's victory over Moab now serves as an introduction to the story of Sihon's own defeat by Israel.
