The LORD said to Moses:

Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, this is the land that will fall to you as your inheritance — the land of Canaan with its boundaries.

Your southern side shall run from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. Your southern boundary shall begin at the end of the Salt Sea on the east,

then turn south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue on to Zin, and end south of Kadesh Barnea. From there it shall go on to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon,

where it shall turn from Azmon to the Wadi of Egypt and end at the Sea.

For your western boundary you shall have the Great Sea and its coast. This shall be your western boundary.

This shall be your northern boundary: from the Great Sea mark out a line to Mount Hor,

and from Mount Hor mark out a line to Lebo Hamath, and the boundary shall end at Zedad.

Then the boundary shall go on to Ziphron and end at Hazar Enan. This shall be your northern boundary.

For your eastern boundary, mark out a line from Hazar Enan to Shepham.

The boundary shall go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue down until it touches the eastern slope of the Sea of Kinnereth.

Then the boundary shall go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land, with its boundaries on every side.

Moses commanded the Israelites: This is the land you are to receive as your inheritance by lot, the land the LORD has commanded to be given to the nine and a half tribes.

For the tribe of the Reubenites by their ancestral houses and the tribe of the Gadites by their ancestral houses have already received their inheritance, and the half-tribe of Manasseh has received theirs as well.

These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, eastward toward the sunrise.

The LORD said to Moses:

These are the names of the men who shall divide the land among you as your inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.

You shall also take one leader, one leader from each tribe, to apportion the land as an inheritance.

And these are the names of the men: from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;

from the tribe of Simeon, Shemuel son of Ammihud;

from the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Kislon;

the leader from the tribe of Dan, Bukki son of Jogli;

from the sons of Joseph: the leader from the tribe of Manasseh, Hanniel son of Ephod,

and the leader from the tribe of Ephraim, Kemuel son of Shiphtan;

the leader from the tribe of Zebulun, Elizaphan son of Parnach;

the leader from the tribe of Issachar, Paltiel son of Azzan;

the leader from the tribe of Asher, Ahihud son of Shelomi;

the leader from the tribe of Naphtali, Pedahel son of Ammihud.

These are the men the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.

Chapter 34 contains the most detailed description of the borders of the promised land in all the books of Moses. The southern border extends from the Salt Sea (Dead Sea) via the Wilderness of Zin along Edom's boundary, through the Ascent of Akrabbim (Ma'ale Akrabbim), to Kadesh-Barnea and onward to the Brook of Egypt (Wadi el-Arish). The western border is the Mediterranean Sea ("the great sea"). The northern border runs from "Mount Hor" (likely a mountain in the Lebanon region, not the same one where Aaron died) via Lebo-Hamat (the entrance to Hamath) to Zedad, Ziphron, and Hazar-Enan. The eastern border follows southward from Hazar-Enan via Shepham, Riblah, along the east side of the Sea of Chinnereth (Sea of Galilee), and down along the Jordan to the Salt Sea.

Several of these places are difficult to locate with certainty today. Hamath was a significant Aramean kingdom in Syria, and "the entrance to Hamath" (לְבֹא חֲמָת) served as a traditional designation for Israel's ideal northern border. Riblah by the Orontes River was a strategically important location later used as headquarters by both Egyptian and Babylonian kings.

Events and Customs

The allocation of land by casting lots (גּוֹרָל, goral) was a widespread practice in the ancient Near East for deciding important matters, since it was believed that the outcome was directed by divine will. In an Israelite context, this was not random but a way of letting the Lord determine the distribution (cf. Prov 16:33). The fact that nine and a half tribes were to receive land west of the Jordan, while two and a half tribes had already received land east of the Jordan (Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh), reflects the agreement from chapter 32.

Border descriptions of this type have parallels in other ancient Near Eastern documents, particularly Hittite and Egyptian treaties and administrative texts, where precise boundary definitions were important for establishing territorial claims and preventing conflicts.

People

The chapter names the leaders who were to distribute the land: Eleazar the high priest (Aaron's son and successor) and Joshua son of Nun, together with one prince (נָשִׂיא, nasi) from each of the ten tribes that were to receive land west of the Jordan. Caleb son of Jephunneh is mentioned as the representative for Judah—he was one of the two spies who had shown faith in God forty years earlier and therefore was allowed to live and enter the land.
