This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:

"Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak with them. Bring them to the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and offer them wine to drink."

So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, along with his brothers and all his sons—the whole house of the Rechabites—

and I brought them to the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, the man of God. It was next to the chamber of the officials, above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum, the keeper of the threshold.

Then I set before the members of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine and cups, and I said to them, "Drink some wine."

But they answered, "We drink no wine, for Jonadab son of Rechab, our father, commanded us: 'You and your children are never to drink wine.

You are not to build houses, or sow seed, or plant vineyards, or own them. Instead, you are to live in tents all your days, so that you may live long in the land where you are sojourning.'

We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab son of Rechab, our father, in everything he commanded us: to drink no wine all our days—neither we, nor our wives, nor our sons and daughters.

We build no houses to live in, and we have no vineyard or field or seed.

We have lived in tents, obeying and doing everything our father Jonadab commanded us.

But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched into the land, we said, 'Come, let us go into Jerusalem to escape the army of the Chaldeans and the army of the Arameans.' So we have been living in Jerusalem."

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

"This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not accept correction and listen to my words? declares the LORD.

The command of Jonadab son of Rechab, who ordered his sons not to drink wine, has been carried out. To this day they have drunk none, because they obeyed their father's command. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you have not listened to me.

Again and again I sent you all my servants the prophets, saying, 'Turn now, each of you, from your evil way; mend your deeds and do not follow other gods to serve them, and dwell in the land I gave to you and your fathers.' But you would not incline your ear or listen to me.

The sons of Jonadab son of Rechab have kept the command their father gave them, but this people has not listened to me.

Therefore this is what the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am about to bring on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem every disaster I have pronounced against them, because I spoke to them and they did not listen; I called to them and they did not answer."

Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, "This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and have kept all his precepts, doing everything he commanded you,

therefore this is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never lack a descendant to stand before me."

People

The Rechabites were a clan group descended from Jonadab (also called Jehonadab), the son of Rekab. Jonadab lived in the 800s B.C.E. and is known from 2 Kings 10:15-23, where he supported Jehu in the eradication of Baal worship in Israel. The Rechabites were likely originally Kenites (1 Chron. 2:55), a people connected to Moses' family by marriage. Jaazaniah, son of Jeremiah, son of Hassenaah, is mentioned as the clan leader during Jeremiah's time. The naming of three generations indicates a prominent family.

Hananiah, son of Gemariah, is referred to as "the man of God" (אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים), a title usually reserved for prophets. His chamber in the temple suggests he held an official religious function, possibly as a prophet or leader of a school of prophets. Vine cultivation was closely tied to Canaanite religion and fertility cults. Living in tents symbolized dependence on God, as the Israelites had lived in the wilderness. This lifestyle was a form of religious protest and purity that had lasted for over 200 years when Jeremiah met them.

The test with wine was a prophetic symbolic act (אוֹת). Jeremiah knew the Rechabites would refuse, and the point was precisely the contrast: a clan that faithfully obeyed their human ancestor's commands for generations, while Judah repeatedly broke the covenant of the living God.
