At that time, declares the LORD, they will bring out from their graves the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of Judah's officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
They will spread them out before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they loved and served, which they followed and consulted and worshiped. They will not be gathered or buried; they will be like dung on the face of the ground.
Then all who remain of this evil family will choose death rather than life, in every place where I have driven them, declares the LORD of hosts.
You shall say to them: Thus says the LORD: When people fall, do they not get up again? When someone turns away, does he not turn back?
Why then has this people, Jerusalem, turned away in perpetual apostasy? They cling to deceit; they refuse to return.
I have listened and heard: they do not speak what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying, "What have I done?" Every one of them turns to his own course, like a horse plunging into battle.
Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift, and the crane keep the time of their coming. But my people do not know the ordinance of the LORD.
How can you say, "We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us," when in fact the lying pen of the scribes has turned it into a lie?
The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped. See, they have rejected the word of the LORD—so what wisdom do they have?
Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to new owners. From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice deceit.
They dress the wound of my people as though it were nothing, saying, "Peace, peace," when there is no peace.
Are they ashamed of the abomination they have committed? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they will be brought down, says the LORD.
I will surely gather them in, declares the LORD. There are no grapes on the vine, no figs on the fig tree, and the leaves are withered; what I gave them is gone from them.
Why are we sitting here? Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities and perish there. For the LORD our God has doomed us to perish and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.
We hoped for peace, but no good has come; for a time of healing, but there is only terror.
From Dan the snorting of his horses is heard; at the neighing of his stallions the whole land trembles. They come and devour the land and everything in it, the city and all who live there.
See, I am sending venomous snakes among you, vipers that cannot be charmed, and they will bite you, declares the LORD.
My grief is beyond healing; my heart is sick within me.
Listen—the cry of my people from a distant land: "Is the LORD not in Zion? Is her King no longer there?" Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images, with their worthless foreign idols?
"The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved."
For the wound of my people I am wounded; I mourn, and horror grips me.
Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has no healing come for the wound of my people?
Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of my people!
