This is what the LORD said to me: "Go and buy yourself a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water."

So I bought the belt, as the LORD had said, and put it around my waist.

Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time:

"Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go at once to the Euphrates and hide it there in a cleft of the rock."

So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the LORD had commanded me.

After many days the LORD said to me, "Get up, go to the Euphrates and take back the belt I told you to hide there."

So I went to the Euphrates and dug, and I took the belt from the place where I had hidden it. But the belt was ruined—good for nothing at all.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

This is what the LORD says: In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.

These evil people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their own hearts and go after other gods to serve them and bow down to them—they will be like this belt, good for nothing at all.

For as a belt clings to a man's waist, so I bound the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to myself, declares the LORD, to be my people, my renown, my praise, and my glory. But they would not listen.

Speak this word to them: This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Every jar is meant to be filled with wine. And when they say to you, "Don't we know very well that every jar is meant to be filled with wine?"—

then tell them: This is what the LORD says: I am going to fill with drunkenness all who live in this land—the kings who sit on David's throne, the priests, the prophets, and all who live in Jerusalem.

I will smash them one against another, parents and children together, declares the LORD. I will show no pity, no mercy, no compassion to keep me from destroying them.

Hear and pay attention; do not be arrogant, for the LORD has spoken.

Give glory to the LORD your God before he brings the darkness, before your feet stumble on the darkening hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it to deep gloom and make it thick darkness.

But if you will not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly, overflowing with tears, because the LORD's flock has been taken captive.

Say to the king and the queen mother: Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns have fallen from your heads.

The cities of the Negev are shut up, and there is no one to open them. All Judah is carried into exile, carried away completely.

Lift up your eyes and see those coming from the north. Where is the flock entrusted to you, the sheep that were your glory?

What will you say when he sets over you as rulers the very ones you trained to be your allies? Will not pangs seize you like a woman in labor?

And if you ask yourself, "Why has this happened to me?"—it is because of your many sins that your skirts have been stripped off and your body violated.

Can a Cushite change his skin, or a leopard its spots? Neither can you do good, you who are schooled in evil.

I will scatter them like chaff driven off by the desert wind.

This is your lot, the portion I have measured out for you, declares the LORD, because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies.

So I myself will pull your skirts up over your face, and your shame will be seen—

your adulteries, your lustful neighing, your shameless prostitution. On the hills and in the fields I have seen your detestable acts. Woe to you, Jerusalem! How long will you remain unclean?

However, many scholars believe the text instead points to Parah (Hebrew: פָּרָה), a town in the tribe of Benjamin (Josh 18:23) only 6–7 kilometers northeast of Anathoth, Jeremiah’s hometown, near Wadi Farah. This location features rock formations with cracks and hollows that match the description. The wordplay between Parah and Perat would have been clear to the original audience, while also symbolically pointing toward Babylon by the Euphrates.

Negev towns (verse 19): Southern Judah was strategically important as a buffer against Egypt. The statement that these towns "are shut up" suggests either that they had already been conquered by the Babylonians or that refugees from the north had overcrowded them, leaving no room for more.

The king and the queen mother (verse 18): This phrasing likely refers to King Jehoiachin and his mother Nehushta (2 Kgs 24:8). The queen mother (gevira) held an official position at the court of Judah with significant political influence.
