Ephesus was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire, with an estimated population of 200,000–250,000 inhabitants. Ephesus was strategically located on the coast of western Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) and was known for its famous Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Paul's extended ministry there (over two years according to verse 10) made the city a crucial hub for spreading the gospel throughout the region.

Tyrannus' school (verse 9, Greek: σχολῇ Τυράννου) was likely a lecture hall or philosophical school where Paul taught daily. According to a Western text variant, teaching took place "from the fifth hour until the tenth" (about 11 a.m.–4 p.m.), which was the hottest part of the day when people took a break from work. This was a common arrangement in antiquity where philosophers and teachers rented rooms for instruction.

The theater at Ephesus (verse 29) was the city's large amphitheater, capable of seating about 24,000 spectators. It was used for both entertainment and public assemblies (ἐκκλησία), and it was the place where the riot against Paul and his companions took place.

People

Sons of Sceva (verse 14) are presented as sons of a Jewish "high priest." The title "high priest" (ἀρχιερέως) is historically problematic, since there is no known record of a high priest by that name in Jerusalem. The title may have been self-appointed or referred to membership in a priestly family, possibly used to lend legitimacy to their exorcism activities.

The city clerk (verse 35, Greek: γραμματεύς) was the highest local official in Ephesus and served as a link between the city and Roman authorities. He calmed the crowd and dissolved the assembly.

Events and Customs

John's disciples in Ephesus (verses 1–7) were a group of about twelve men (ὡσεὶ δώδεκα) who knew only John's baptism (τὸ Ἰωάννου βάπτισμα) and had not heard about the Holy Spirit. After Paul's teaching, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and when Paul laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

Jewish traveling exorcists (verse 13) were a known phenomenon in antiquity. Jewish exorcism held high esteem in the Greco-Roman world, and many Jewish exorcists traveled around offering their services. They often used invocations of powerful names and formulas, which explains the attempt to use Jesus' name as a magical formula.

The burning of magic books (verse 19) reflects Ephesus' reputation as a center for magic and occult practices. The expression "Ephesian letters" (Ἐφέσια γράμματα) was in antiquity a well-known term for magical formulas and incantations. The value of 50,000 silver coins (μυριάδας πέντε ἀργυρίου) represented a substantial sum, showing the extent of magical practice among new believers.

The riot in the theater (verses 29–41) was triggered by the silversmith Demetrius, who feared financial loss due to Paul's preaching. The crowd shouted "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" (Μεγάλη ἡ Ἄρτεμις Ἐφεσίων) for about two hours before the city clerk calmed them down.

The large theater mentioned in the chapter is well preserved and shows the impressive size that matches Luke's description. Inscriptions found in Ephesus confirm the existence of silversmith guilds and mention the worship of Artemis. One inscription refers to "silversmiths" as a group, confirming Luke's portrayal of an organized craftsmen's guild.

The Temple of Artemis (Artemision) has been located, although only its foundation remains. Archaeologists have found many small terracotta and metal figures of Artemis as well as miniature temples resembling those produced in Demetrius' workshop. Ephesian coins from the period bear images of the temple and the goddess, often with the title "neokoros" used by the city clerk in verse 35.
