For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

I said, "I will watch my ways so I do not sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are before me."

I was mute in silence; I kept still, even from good, and my pain grew worse.

My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:

"Show me, LORD, my end and what the measure of my days is; let me know how fleeting I am.

You have made my days mere handbreadths; my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely everyone stands as a breath. Selah

Surely everyone walks about as a mere shadow; surely for nothing they bustle about; they heap up wealth and do not know who will gather it.

And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.

Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools.

I am silent; I do not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done it.

Remove your plague from me; I am consumed by the hostility of your hand.

When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what he treasures. Surely everyone is but a breath. Selah

Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a stranger with you, a sojourner, like all my fathers.

Look away from me, that I may find relief, before I depart and am no more."

He led a Levitical family of musicians. The phrase "to Jeduthun" may indicate that the psalm was dedicated to him, intended to be performed in his musical tradition, or designed for his choir. His name is possibly derived from יָדָה (yadah, "to praise/confess"), which ironically contrasts with the psalm’s theme of silence and restraint.
