PsalmsChapter 89

A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.
I will sing of the LORD's steadfast love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known to every generation.
For I have said, "Steadfast love is built to last forever; in the heavens you establish your faithfulness."
"I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant:
I will establish your offspring forever and build your throne for all generations." Selah
The heavens praise your wonders, LORD, and your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies can compare with the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like him?
God is feared in the great council of the holy ones, awesome above all who surround him.
LORD God of hosts, who is like you? Mighty are you, LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
You rule over the raging of the sea; when its waves rise up, you still them.
You crushed Rahab like a corpse; with your mighty arm you scattered your enemies.
The heavens are yours, and yours the earth; you founded the world and all that fills it.
North and south you created; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
Yours is an arm of power; your hand is strong, your right hand lifted high.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.
Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, LORD, in the light of your face.
They rejoice in your name all day long; in your righteousness they are lifted up.
For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favor you raise our horn high.
For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel.
Once you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones and said: "I have granted help to a warrior; I have raised up a chosen one from the people.
I have found David my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him.
My hand will steady him; my arm will give him strength.
No enemy will outwit him, no wicked man oppress him.
I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him.
My faithfulness and my love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be lifted high.
I will set his hand upon the sea, his right hand upon the rivers.
He will call to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the rock of my salvation.'
And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
Forever I will keep my love for him, and my covenant with him will stand firm.
I will establish his offspring forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.
If his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my judgments,
if they violate my statutes and fail to keep my commandments,
I will punish their rebellion with the rod and their guilt with blows;
but I will not withdraw my love from him, nor will I betray my faithfulness.
I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have spoken.
Once and for all I have sworn by my holiness: I will not lie to David.
His offspring will endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me;
like the moon it will stand firm forever, a faithful witness in the sky." Selah
But now you have cast off and rejected; you have raged against your anointed.
You have renounced the covenant with your servant and defiled his crown in the dust.
You have broken down all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins.
All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors.
You have raised the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice.
You have turned back the edge of his sword and have not upheld him in battle.
You have put an end to his splendor and hurled his throne to the ground.
You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah
How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire?
Remember how fleeting my life is. For what emptiness have you created all humankind?
Who can live and never see death? Who can save his soul from the grip of the grave? Selah
Lord, where is your love of old, which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
Remember, Lord, how your servants are mocked, how I bear in my heart the insults of all the many peoples,
how your enemies have mocked, LORD, how they have mocked every step of your anointed.
Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and amen.
