Awake, awake! Clothe yourself with strength, Zion. Put on your garments of splendor, Jerusalem, the holy city. Never again will the uncircumcised and the unclean enter you.

Shake off the dust; rise up and sit enthroned, Jerusalem. Loose the chains from your neck, captive Daughter Zion.

For this is what the LORD says: You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed.

For this is what the Lord GOD says: At first my people went down to Egypt to live there as strangers, and Assyria oppressed them for no reason.

And now what do I have here? declares the LORD. For my people have been carried off for nothing; their rulers howl, declares the LORD, and all day long, without ceasing, my name is despised.

Therefore my people will know my name; on that day they will know that it is I who speak: Here I am.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the herald who proclaims peace, who brings good news of happiness, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns!"

Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices; together they shout for joy. For with their own eyes they will see the LORD returning to Zion.

Break out together into songs of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the LORD has comforted his people; he has redeemed Jerusalem.

The LORD has bared his holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.

Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch nothing unclean! Come out from her midst; purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of the LORD.

But you will not leave in haste, nor will you go in flight; for the LORD goes before you, and the God of Israel is your rear guard.

See, my servant will prosper; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.

Just as many were appalled at him—his appearance was so disfigured, beyond that of any man, and his form beyond human likeness—

so he will sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were never told, they will see, and what they never heard, they will understand.

Places

The chapter focuses on Zion and Jerusalem, used in parallel as poetic names for God’s people and their capital. "Zion" was originally the name of the Jebusite fortress that David captured (2 Sam 5:7), but later came to refer to the entire temple hill and the city as a whole. The expression "the holy city" (עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ, ir haqqodesh) emphasizes Jerusalem’s unique status as the place where God’s temple stood. Verse 4 mentions Egypt and Assyria as historical oppressors—Egypt from the patriarchal era and the Exodus, Assyria as the power that threatened Judah and deported the northern kingdom of Israel.

Events and Customs

Verses 11–12 contain an appeal for ritual purity for those who carry "the vessels of the Lord" (כְּלֵי יְהוָה, kele YHWH). This refers to the sacred objects from the temple that the Babylonians had taken away (2 Kgs 25:13–15; Ezra 1:7–11). The priests and Levites who were to bring these back had to be ritually clean. The contrast with the Exodus motif in verse 12 is striking: while the Israelites fled from Egypt "in haste" (בְּחִפָּזוֹן, beḥippazon; cf. Exod 12:11; Deut 16:3), the return from Babylon will take place with dignity, with the Lord Himself going before and behind them.

Key Terms

The word מְבַשֵּׂר (mevasser) in verse 7 means "messenger" or "one who brings good news." In Old Testament times, this was someone who ran ahead to report victory in war (cf. 2 Sam 18:19–27). The message "Your God is king!" (מָלַךְ אֱלֹהָיִךְ, malakh Elohayikh) is a proclamation formula announcing the Lord’s enthronement and sovereign rule. The expression "eye to eye" (עַיִן בְּעַיִן, ayin be'ayin) in verse 8 means to see directly and clearly—the watchmen themselves will be eyewitnesses when the Lord returns to Zion.

The verb יַזֶּה (yazzeh) in verse 15 is debated. Traditionally it is translated "sprinkle," as in the ritual cleansing of nations (cf. Lev 4:6; Num 19:18). Some scholars suggest the meaning "cause to startle" (in amazement), based on Arabic parallels. In the context of the suffering servant (52:13–53:12), the motif of cleansing makes theological sense: the servant, who himself was disfigured, will bring cleansing to many nations.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The Cyrus Cylinder (ca. 539 BC) confirms the Persian policy of allowing deported peoples to return home and rebuild their sanctuaries. This archaeological find sheds light on the historical background for the poetry of return in this chapter. Also, Isaiah 52:11–12’s mention of the temple treasures being brought back corresponds with Ezra’s account that Cyrus returned what Nebuchadnezzar had plundered (Ezra 1:7–11).
