An oracle concerning Damascus: Look, Damascus will cease to be a city; it will become a heap of ruins.

The cities of Aroer are abandoned. They will be left to the flocks, which will lie down there with no one to frighten them.

The fortress will vanish from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus. What is left of Aram will fare like the glory of the Israelites, declares the LORD of hosts.

On that day the glory of Jacob will fade, and the fat of his body will waste away.

It will be as when a reaper gathers the standing grain and his arm harvests the ears; it will be as when someone gleans ears of grain in the Valley of Rephaim.

Yet gleanings will be left in it, as when an olive tree is beaten: two or three olives at the very top, four or five on the fruitful branches, declares the LORD, the God of Israel.

On that day people will look to their Maker, and their eyes will turn to the Holy One of Israel.

They will no longer look to the altars, the work of their own hands, nor gaze at what their fingers have made, the Asherah poles and the incense altars.

On that day their fortified cities will be like the abandoned places of the thicket and the topmost bough, left empty before the Israelites; and all will be desolation.

For you have forgotten the God of your salvation; you have not remembered the Rock, your refuge. That is why you plant your lovely gardens and set out cuttings from a foreign vine.

The day you plant them, you make them grow; the morning you sow, you bring them into bloom — but the harvest vanishes on the day of sickness and incurable pain.

Ah, the din of many peoples — they rage like the raging of the seas! The uproar of nations — they roar like the roar of mighty waters!

The nations roar like the roar of great waters, but he rebukes them, and they flee far away, driven like chaff on the mountains before the wind, like whirling dust before a gale.

At evening, sudden terror! Before morning, they are gone. This is the portion of those who plunder us, the lot of those who rob us.

Damascus was the capital of the Aramean kingdom (Syria) and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city lay by the Barada River in a fertile oasis east of the Anti-Lebanon mountains. In Isaiah’s time, Damascus was the center of a powerful regional state that was often at war with, or allied to, Israel and Judah. The city was known for its trade and strategic location along important trade routes.

Aroer (verse 2) likely refers to cities in the Transjordan region, possibly in Moab or Gilead. The name can also be interpreted as "ruins" or "bare" in a figurative sense, describing devastation.

The Valley of Rephaim (verse 5) was a fertile valley southwest of Jerusalem, known for its grain production. The valley is mentioned several times in the Old Testament and was an important agricultural area. The image of harvesting in this valley illustrates the completeness of God’s judgment.

Events and Customs

The Syro-Ephraimite War (735–732 B.C.) forms the historical background for this chapter. King Rezin of Damascus and King Pekah of Israel (Ephraim) formed an alliance against Assyria and tried to force Judah into joining them. When King Ahaz of Judah refused, they attacked Jerusalem. The Asherah poles were wooden symbols representing the fertility goddess Asherah, while "sun pillars" (chammanim) were incense altars or stone supports associated with sun worship. King Rezin was killed, and the Aramean kingdom ceased to exist as an independent state. This provides solid historical confirmation of the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. Archaeological excavations in Damascus have also uncovered destruction layers from this period, although modern settlement makes extensive excavation difficult.
