Hear this, house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and who came from the loins of Judah, you who swear by the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel—but not in truth or righteousness.
For they call themselves after the holy city and lean on the God of Israel—the LORD of hosts is his name.
The former things I declared long ago; they went out from my mouth, and I made them heard. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
Because I knew how stubborn you are—your neck an iron sinew, your forehead bronze—
I told you long ago; before it happened I made you hear it, so you could not say, "My idol did this; my carved image and my cast figure ordained it."
You have heard it—look at it all. Will you not admit it? From now on I make you hear new things, hidden things you have not known.
They are created now, not long ago; before today you never heard of them, so you cannot say, "Look, I knew them already."
You have not heard, you have not known, and long ago your ear was not opened. For I knew how treacherous you are; you have been called a rebel from birth.
For my name's sake I hold back my anger; for the sake of my praise I restrain myself toward you, so as not to destroy you.
See, I have refined you, but not with silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
For my own sake, for my own sake I act—why should my name be profaned? I will not give my glory to another.
Listen to me, Jacob, and Israel, whom I have called: I am he. I am the first, and I am the last.
My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens. When I summon them, they stand forth together.
Gather together, all of you, and listen: which of them ever foretold these things? The LORD loves him; he will carry out his purpose against Babylon, and his arm will be against the Chaldeans.
I, I myself have spoken; yes, I have called him. I have brought him, and he will succeed in his way.
Come near to me and hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the moment it came to be, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his Spirit.
This is what the LORD says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you for your good, who leads you in the way you should go.
If only you had listened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
Your offspring would have been like the sand, the children of your body like its grains; their name would never be cut off or wiped out from before me.
Go out from Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans! With a shout of joy declare it, proclaim it, send it out to the ends of the earth. Say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob."
They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow from the rock for them—he split the rock, and water gushed out.
There is no peace, says the LORD, for the wicked.
