"Now you, son of man, take a brick, set it in front of you, and engrave on it a city — Jerusalem.

Lay siege against it: build a siege wall, throw up a ramp, set up camps, and place battering rams around it.

Then take an iron griddle and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. Set your face toward it; it shall be under siege, and you yourself shall besiege it. This is a sign for the house of Israel.

"Then lie down on your left side and lay the guilt of the house of Israel upon that side. For as many days as you lie on that side, you shall bear their guilt.

I have assigned you the years of their guilt as a number of days: three hundred and ninety days. So you shall bear the guilt of the house of Israel.

When you have finished these, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the guilt of the house of Judah forty days. I have assigned you one day for each year.

Set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem, with your arm bared, and prophesy against it.

And see, I am putting ropes on you so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have completed the days of your siege.

"Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a single vessel and make them into bread for yourself. You shall eat it during the number of days you lie on your side — three hundred and ninety days.

The food you eat shall be weighed out, twenty shekels a day; you shall eat it at set times.

And you shall drink water by measure, a sixth of a hin; you shall drink it at set times.

You shall eat it as a barley cake, baking it in their sight over human excrement."

And the LORD said, "This is how the people of Israel shall eat their bread — unclean — among the nations where I will drive them."

Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything that died of itself or was torn by beasts, and no tainted meat has ever entered my mouth."

He said to me, "See, I allow you cow dung instead of human dung; you may prepare your bread over that."

Then he said to me, "Son of man, I am about to break the staff of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread by weight and in anxiety, and drink water by measure and in horror,

so that, lacking bread and water, they will be appalled, each man with his brother, and waste away in their guilt."

Chapter 4 contains several prophetic sign-acts (אוֹת, 'ot) that were an established form of prophetic communication in ancient Israel. The prophet was to literally perform symbolic actions that dramatized God's message. Such sign-acts are also found among other prophets (e.g., Isa 20; Jer 13; 27), but Ezekiel performs the most extreme and prolonged ones.

The siege model that Ezekiel was instructed to build (vv. 1–3) reflects actual military techniques from Assyrian-Babylonian warfare. The terms דָּיֵק (dāyēq, "siege ramp/earthwork"), סֹלְלָה (sōlelāh, "rampart") and כָּרִים (kārîm, "battering rams/siege engines") were well-known elements in the systematic sieging of cities at that time. The iron pan (מַחֲבַת בַּרְזֶל, machăvat barzel) set as an iron wall between the prophet and the city (v. 3) symbolizes God's separation from His people.

Lying on one side for 390 days for the house of Israel and then 40 days for the house of Judah (vv. 4–6) represents an unusual physical burden that underscores the seriousness of the message. The formula "one day for each year" (v. 6) links the sign-act to historical periods of sin. The 390 days/years have been interpreted in various ways, but the number likely points to the long-standing sin of the northern kingdom. Chapter-Specific Findings

Archaeological excavations have uncovered several examples of clay tablets with city plans and military maps from Mesopotamia, including the famous map of Nippur (dated to about 1500 BC). This confirms that Ezekiel's command to draw Jerusalem on a clay tablet would have been immediately understandable to Jews in Babylonian exile. Excavations in Jerusalem have also documented remains of siege ramps and destruction from the Babylonian siege that culminated in 586 BC, confirming the realism of Ezekiel's symbolic portrayal.
