In the year that the commander in chief came to Ashdod, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, he fought against Ashdod and captured it.[^1] [^1]: "Commander in chief" renders an Assyrian military title (Tartan), the second-in-command of the army.

At that time the LORD spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz: "Go, take off the sackcloth from your waist and remove the sandals from your feet." And he did so, going stripped and barefoot.

Then the LORD said, "Just as my servant Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years as a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush,

so the king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old alike, stripped and barefoot, with buttocks bared—the shame of Egypt.

Then they will be dismayed and put to shame because of Cush, their hope, and Egypt, their boast.

And in that day the inhabitants of this coastland will say, "Look what has become of our hope, the one we fled to for help and rescue from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?"

Tartan (תַרְתָּן) is not a proper name but an Assyrian military title designating the supreme commander, second only to the king himself. This title is also known from 2 Kings 18:17, where a tartan was sent against Jerusalem. The fact that Sargon dispatched his tartan against Ashdod shows this was a significant military operation, even though the king did not lead the campaign personally.

Sargon II (סַרְגוֹן) ruled over Assyria from 722–705 B.C. and is the only Assyrian king with this name mentioned in the Bible. His name was known for a long time only from this verse until archaeological excavations in the 19th century confirmed his existence. He succeeded Shalmaneser V and completed the conquest of Samaria in 722 B.C.

Ashdod (אַשְׁדּוֹד) was one of the five major Philistine city-states, strategically located along the coastal route known as the Via Maris between Egypt and Mesopotamia. The city lay about 5 km from the Mediterranean coast in southern Canaan. During this period, Ashdod led a rebellion against Assyrian dominance, supported by Egypt and Cush, which provoked Sargon’s punitive expedition in 711 B.C.

Cush (כּוּשׁ) refers to the kingdom south of Egypt, roughly corresponding to present-day Sudan and parts of Ethiopia. At this time, the 25th Egyptian dynasty, also called the Cushite or Nubian dynasty, controlled Egypt. Treatment of war captives in the ancient Near East included systematic humiliation. The inscriptions report that Azuri, king of Ashdod, was deposed and replaced by his brother Ahimiti, who later also was overthrown in a popular uprising. The new leader, Yamani, fled to Egypt but was later handed over to Assyria. This confirms the historical framework for Isaiah’s prophetic action and warning against relying on Egyptian help.
