This is the word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words on a scroll at Jeremiah's dictation, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:

This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning you, Baruch:

You have said, "How wretched I am! The LORD has added grief to my pain. I am worn out with groaning, and I find no rest."

Say this to him: This is what the LORD says: Look — what I have built I am tearing down, and what I have planted I am uprooting; and so it will be throughout the whole land.

And you — are you seeking great things for yourself? Do not seek them. For I am about to bring disaster on all flesh, declares the LORD, but wherever you go I will grant you your life as spoil.

People

Baruch son of Neriah is the main character in this short chapter. He was Jeremiah’s scribe and faithful assistant. Baruch belonged to a prominent family in Jerusalem—his brother Seraiah was an official at court (Jer 51:59). His role as a scribe (sofer) meant that he was educated and held a respected position in society, which makes the warning against "seeking great things for yourself" especially relevant.

The chapter is explicitly dated to the fourth year of King Jehoiakim’s reign (605/604 B.C.). This was the same year as the battle at Carchemish (mentioned in Jer 46:2), where Babylon defeated Egypt and became the dominant power in the Middle East. It was also the year when Baruch wrote down the first scroll that was later burned by King Jehoiakim (Jer 36). This is among the most direct archaeological confirmations of a person mentioned in prophetic literature.
