At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD:

This is what the LORD says: Stand in the court of the LORD's house and speak to all who come from the cities of Judah to worship in the house of the LORD. Tell them everything I command you; do not hold back a single word.

Perhaps they will listen and each one turn from his evil way. Then I will relent of the disaster I intend to bring on them because of the evil of their deeds.

Say to them: This is what the LORD says: If you will not listen to me and walk in my law, which I have set before you,

and heed the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again, though you have not listened,

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse among all the nations of the earth.

The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD.

And when Jeremiah had finished saying everything the LORD had commanded him to say to all the people, the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him and said, "You must die!

Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD that this house will become like Shiloh and this city will be desolate, without an inhabitant?" And all the people gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.

When the officials of Judah heard of these things, they came up from the king's palace to the house of the LORD and took their seats at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD's house.

Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, "This man deserves a sentence of death, for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears."

Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people: "The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city everything you have heard.

Now then, reform your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will relent of the disaster he has pronounced against you.

As for me, I am in your hands. Do with me whatever seems good and right to you.

But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants; for in truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing."

Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, "This man does not deserve a sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God."

And some of the elders of the land rose and said to the whole assembly of the people:

"Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and he said to all the people of Judah: 'This is what the LORD of hosts says: Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins, and the temple mount a wooded height.'

Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and seek his favor, so that the LORD relented of the disaster he had pronounced against them? But we would be bringing great harm on our own lives!

Now there was also a man named Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim, who prophesied in the name of the LORD. He prophesied against this city and this land in words just like Jeremiah's.

When King Jehoiakim and all his warriors and all the officials heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But Uriah heard of it and was afraid, so he fled and went to Egypt.

Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor and others with him.

They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who struck him down with the sword and threw his corpse among the graves of the common people.

But Ahikam son of Shaphan gave Jeremiah his support, so that he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

People

Jehoiakim was the son of King Josiah, who favored religious reform, but he was installed as king by Pharaoh Neco II after Josiah’s son Jehoahaz was deposed (2 Kings 23:34). His original name was Eliakim, but Pharaoh Neco changed it to Jehoiakim. In this chapter, "the beginning of his reign" (v. 1) serves as the time marker, placing these events around 609–608 B.C.

Ahikam, son of Shaphan (v. 24) belonged to an influential family that had supported Josiah’s reforms. His father Shaphan was secretary under Josiah and was involved in the discovery of the Book of the Law (2 Kings 22:8–14). Ahikam himself had been part of the delegation that consulted the prophetess Huldah. The Shaphan family represented a pro-prophetic faction at court that repeatedly protected Jeremiah.

Elnatan, son of Achbor (v. 22) was a court official sent to Egypt to bring back the prophet Uriah. The same person is mentioned later in Jer 36:12, 25, where he was present when Jeremiah’s scroll was read and was among those who urged the king not to burn it.

Micah of Moresheth (v. 18) refers to the prophet Micah, who prophesied about a century earlier during King Hezekiah’s reign. His prophecy concerning the destruction of Zion (Mic 3:12) is cited as precedent showing that a prophet could pronounce judgment on Jerusalem without being executed.

Uriah, son of Shemaiah (vv. 20–23) was a prophet from Kiriath-jearim who delivered the same message as Jeremiah. His fate contrasts sharply with Jeremiah’s: he fled to Egypt, was brought back by Jehoiakim’s envoys, executed, and buried in a common grave.

Places

The Temple Court (Hebrew: chatsar beit-YHWH) was the outer courtyard where people from all the towns of Judah gathered for worship (v. 2). This was a public space where prophets could reach a large audience, especially during festivals when pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem.

The New Gate (v. 10) was likely a gate in the temple wall built by King Jotham (2 Kings 15:35). This gate served as a meeting place for legal decisions, and it was here that "the officials of Judah" sat to judge Jeremiah’s case.

Kiriath-jearim (v. 20) was the hometown of the prophet Uriah, located about 13 km west of Jerusalem. The city is best known as the place where the ark of the covenant was kept for twenty years (1 Sam 7:1–2). That a prophet came from this town underscores that prophetic activity was not limited to Jerusalem.

Shiloh (vv. 6, 9) is cited as a warning example. Shiloh had been an important cultic site where the tabernacle stood during the period of the judges, but it was destroyed—likely by the Philistines around 1050 B.C. Jeremiah’s comparison between the temple and Shiloh was shocking because it implied that even the Lord’s house could be destroyed.

The Trial of Jeremiah reflects the legal system in ancient Judah. The priests and prophets acted as accusers, "the officials of Judah" (שָׂרֵי יְהוּדָה) served as judges, and the people shifted roles from accuser to jury. The charge was that he had prophesied against the temple and the city (v. 11), which his opponents considered a crime worthy of death. The phrase "you shall die" (mot tamut, v. 8) was a formal death sentence.

The Precedent Argument in verses 17–19 shows a remarkable legal practice: the elders cite an earlier case (Micah under Hezekiah) to establish that prophetic judgment does not automatically qualify for the death penalty. This is a rare example of using prophetic precedent in a legal context.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The name "Elnatan, son of Achbor" is attested in archaeological finds. A bulla (seal impression) with the inscription "Belonging to Elnatan, son of Achbor" was discovered in Iron Age excavations in the region of Judah, confirming the historicity of this court official who played a role in the persecution of the prophet Uriah.
