For the choirmaster. Of David, the servant of the LORD, who sang to the LORD the words of this song on the day the LORD rescued him from the grasp of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
He said: I love you, LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my crag where I take refuge, my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.
The cords of death wound around me; the torrents of destruction terrified me.
The cords of the grave coiled about me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called on the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry before him reached his ears.
Then the earth reeled and shook; the foundations of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry.
Smoke rose from his nostrils, and consuming fire came from his mouth; burning coals blazed out of him.
He bent the heavens low and came down, thick darkness beneath his feet.
He mounted a cherub and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—the dark rain clouds of the skies.
Out of the brightness before him his clouds swept on, with hail and coals of fire.
The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High raised his voice, with hail and coals of fire.
He shot his arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning and routed them.
The channels of the waters were laid bare, and the foundations of the world uncovered at your rebuke, LORD, at the blast of breath from your nostrils.
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into open ground; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he repaid me.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned wickedly from my God.
All his judgments are before me; I have not put his statutes away from me.
I was blameless before him and kept myself from guilt.
So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
With the faithful you show yourself faithful; with the blameless you show yourself blameless.
With the pure you show yourself pure, but with the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
You save a humble people, but you bring down eyes that are haughty.
You light my lamp; the LORD my God turns my darkness into light.
With you I can charge a raiding party; with my God I can scale a wall.
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is proven true. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him.
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock except our God?
It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me secure on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You have given me the shield of your salvation; your right hand upholds me, and your gentleness has made me great.
You make a wide path for my steps, and my ankles do not give way.
I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back until they were destroyed.
I struck them down, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet.
You armed me with strength for the battle; you made my adversaries bow beneath me.
You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed those who hated me.
They cried for help, but no one saved them; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer.
I ground them fine as dust before the wind; I poured them out like mud in the streets.
You delivered me from the strife of the people; you made me head of nations. A people I did not know now serve me.
As soon as they hear of me, they obey me; foreigners come cringing to me.
Foreigners lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds.
The LORD lives! Blessed be my rock! Exalted be the God of my salvation—
the God who avenges me and subdues nations under me,
who delivers me from my enemies. You lifted me above my adversaries; you rescued me from violent men.
Therefore I will praise you among the nations, LORD; I will sing praise to your name.
He gives his king great victories; he shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.
