The LORD said to Moses: Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: No priest shall make himself unclean for any of his people who dies,

except for his closest relatives — his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother,

or his virgin sister, close to him, who has never had a husband; for her he may make himself unclean.

He shall not make himself unclean for relatives by marriage among his people, and so profane himself.[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew of this verse is obscure; it may mean that a priest must not defile himself for kin related to him only through marriage.

Priests shall not shave bald patches on their heads, or trim the edges of their beards, or cut gashes in their flesh.

They shall be holy to their God and shall not profane the name of their God, for they present the offerings by fire to the LORD, the food of their God; therefore they shall be holy.

A priest shall not marry a woman defiled by prostitution, nor one who has been dishonored, nor a woman divorced from her husband, for the priest is holy to his God.

You shall treat him as holy, for he offers the food of your God. He shall be holy to you, for I am holy — I, the LORD, who makes you holy.

If a priest's daughter defiles herself by prostitution, she profanes her father; she shall be burned with fire.

The priest who is highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured and who has been ordained to wear the sacred garments, shall not let his hair hang loose or tear his clothes.

He shall not go near any dead body; he shall not make himself unclean even for his father or his mother.

He shall not leave the sanctuary or profane the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is upon him. I am the LORD.

He shall marry a woman who is a virgin.

A widow, a divorced woman, or one dishonored by prostitution — these he shall not marry. He shall take as his wife a virgin from his own people,

so that he does not profane his offspring among his people; for I am the LORD, who makes him holy.

The LORD spoke to Moses:

Say to Aaron: For all generations to come, none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God.

No man with a defect may come near: no one blind or lame, disfigured or deformed;

no one with a crippled foot or a crippled hand;

no one hunchbacked or dwarfed, or with a defect in his eye, or with festering or running sores, or with damaged testicles.

No descendant of Aaron the priest who has a defect shall come forward to present the offerings by fire to the LORD. Since he has a defect, he shall not come forward to offer the food of his God.

He may eat the food of his God, both the most holy and the holy;

but he shall not go near the curtain or approach the altar, because he has a defect, so that he does not profane my sanctuaries; for I am the LORD, who makes them holy.

So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.

The high priest is characterized by the anointing oil poured over his head and his consecration to wear the holy garments (v. 10). In ancient Israel, the priesthood formed a hereditary caste within the tribe of Levi, and their status brought both privileges and strict restrictions that went beyond those applying to ordinary Israelites.

Mourning Practices and Holiness Requirements: The chapter forbids priests from making bald patches on their heads (קָרְחָה בְּרֹאשָׁם), shaving the edges of their beards (פְאַת זְקָנָם), or cutting their bodies (v. 5). These practices were widespread mourning rituals in Canaanite culture and among surrounding peoples. Archaeological finds and texts from Ugarit show that self-harm during mourning was common in Canaanite religion. Texts from Mesopotamia, especially from temple archives in Babylon and Assyria, contain similar lists of physical defects that disqualified priests from service. An Akkadian text from Sippar specifies that priests could not have visible blemishes. This shows that the requirement for physical integrity among cultic servants was widespread throughout the ancient Near East region, and that the biblical laws reflect a broader cultural understanding of the demands holiness places on those who approach the gods.
