The high priest Aaron's clothing was not ordinary attire - they were sacred garments filled with symbolism. Each part represented aspects of God's character and the priest's role as mediator between God and the people.

Ephod

A robe made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen. It was skillfully woven with two onyx stones on the shoulders bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Breastpiece (Breastplate)

A square piece with twelve precious stones - one for each tribe. The Urim and Thummim were also kept here to seek God's will.

Robe

A solid blue robe with pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn along the hem, interspersed with gold bells. The bells were to be heard when the priest entered and exited the holy place.

A patterned tunic of fine linen and a skillfully woven sash.

A turban of fine linen with a plate of pure gold on the front inscribed: "Holy to the Lord".

Garments for the Other Priests

Aaron's sons were to wear tunics, sashes, and head coverings - for glory and beauty.

Now bring near to yourself your brother Aaron, and his sons with him, from among the Israelites, to serve me as priests: Aaron, and Aaron's sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
Make holy garments for your brother Aaron, for glory and for beauty.
Speak to all the skilled craftsmen whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, and have them make Aaron's garments, to consecrate him for service to me as priest.
These are the garments they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban, and a sash. They shall make these holy garments for your brother Aaron and for his sons, so that they may serve me as priests.
They shall use gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine linen.
They shall make the ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen, skillfully worked.
Its woven waistband shall be of one piece with it and made like it: of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen.
Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel:
six of their names on the one stone, and the remaining six names on the other stone, in the order of their birth.
With the work of a gem cutter, as a seal is engraved, engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel, and mount them in settings of gold filigree.
Fasten the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel. So Aaron will carry their names on his two shoulders before the LORD as a remembrance.
and two chains of pure gold, twisted like cords, and attach the corded chains to the settings.
Make the breastpiece of judgment, skillfully worked, like the work of the ephod: of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen.
Set in it four rows of precious stones. The first row shall be carnelian, chrysolite, and emerald;
the fourth row, topaz, onyx, and jasper. They shall be mounted in gold filigree.
There shall be twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
Make two gold rings for the breastpiece and fasten them to its two upper corners.
and fasten the other two ends of the cords to the two settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front.
Make two more gold rings and attach them to the two lower corners of the breastpiece, on the inside edge next to the ephod.
Make two more gold rings and attach them to the bottom of the two shoulder pieces of the ephod on the front, close to the seam just above the woven waistband of the ephod.
The breastpiece is to be bound to the ephod with a blue cord, ring to ring, so that it rests on the waistband and does not swing loose from the ephod.
So whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he will carry the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece of judgment, as a continual remembrance before the LORD.
Also put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastpiece of judgment, so that they will be over Aaron's heart whenever he comes before the LORD. Thus Aaron will always carry the judgment of the Israelites over his heart before the LORD.
with an opening for the head in the center of it. Around this opening there shall be a woven binding, like the opening of a coat of armor, so that it will not tear.
On its hem make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn all around, with gold bells between them,
a gold bell and a pomegranate, a gold bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe.
Aaron is to wear it whenever he ministers, so that the sound of it will be heard as he enters the Holy Place before the LORD and as he leaves, and he will not die.
Make a medallion of pure gold and engrave on it, as on a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD.
It shall be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron will bear the guilt involved in the holy gifts the Israelites consecrate, whatever their holy offerings may be. It shall be on his forehead continually, so that they may be accepted before the LORD.
Weave the tunic of fine linen, make the turban of fine linen, and make the sash the work of an embroiderer.
For Aaron's sons you shall make tunics, and sashes, and caps for them, for glory and for beauty.
Clothe your brother Aaron and his sons with them. Then anoint them, ordain them, and consecrate them, so that they may serve me as priests.
Make linen undergarments for them to cover their nakedness, reaching from the waist to the thighs.
Aaron and his sons are to wear them whenever they enter the tent of meeting or approach the altar to minister in the sanctuary, so that they do not bear guilt and die. This shall be a lasting statute for him and for his offspring after him.
