In the first month the Israelites, the whole community, came to the wilderness of Zin, and the people settled at Kadesh. There Miriam died, and there she was buried.

There was no water for the community, so they gathered against Moses and Aaron.

The people quarreled with Moses and said, "If only we had died when our brothers died before the LORD!

Why have you brought the LORD's assembly into this wilderness, for us and our livestock to die here?

Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this miserable place? It has no grain, no figs, no vines, no pomegranates—and there is no water to drink."

Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

The LORD said to Moses:

"Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the community. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water. So you will bring water out of the rock for them and give the community and their livestock something to drink."

So Moses took the staff from before the LORD, as he had commanded him.

Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock, and he said to them, "Listen now, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?"

Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I have given them."

These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and where he showed himself holy among them.

From Kadesh Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom: "This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardship that has come upon us.

Our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers,

but when we cried out to the LORD, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. Now here we are at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.

Please let us pass through your land. We will not cut through any field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from any well. We will travel along the king's highway and will not turn aside to the right or the left until we have passed through your territory."

But Edom answered him, "You may not pass through here. If you try, we will come out against you with the sword."

The Israelites said to him, "We will keep to the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. It is nothing—we only want to pass through on foot."

But he said, "You may not pass through." And Edom came out against them with a large force and a strong hand.

Since Edom refused to let them pass through his territory, Israel turned away from him.

The Israelites, the whole community, set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.

At Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

"Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I have given to the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up Mount Hor.

Remove Aaron's garments and put them on his son Eleazar, for Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will die there."

Moses did as the LORD commanded, and they went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community.

Moses removed Aaron's garments and put them on his son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain,

and when the whole community saw that Aaron had died, all the house of Israel wept for him thirty days.

People

Miriam dies and is buried in Kadesh in this chapter (v. 1). She was the sister of Moses and Aaron and played a significant role in Israel's history—she led the women in song after the exodus from Egypt (Exod 15:20-21) and is called a prophetess. Her death marks the end of an era. The text places the water shortage immediately following her passing (vv. 1-2), which has given rise to traditional interpretations suggesting a connection between the two events.

Eleazar (אֶלְעָזָר), Aaron's son, takes over as high priest in this chapter (vv. 25-28). The transfer of the priestly garments from father to son represents the first orderly succession in the Israelite priesthood. Eleazar would later serve under Joshua and play an important role in the division of the land.

Places

Kadesh (קָדֵשׁ) in the Wilderness of Zin was a major oasis in the northern Negev region, likely identified with today's Ein el-Qudeirat or the nearby Ein Qadis. The name means "holy," and the place served as Israel's main base for much of the wilderness wanderings. Archaeological excavations at Ein el-Qudeirat have uncovered remains from several periods, including a fortress from the Iron Age, although no direct connection to Moses' time has been established.

The King's Highway (דֶּרֶךְ הַמֶּלֶךְ, v. 17) was an important trade route running north-south through Transjordan, from Damascus to the Gulf of Aqaba. This road is known from several ancient sources and was crucial for commerce and military movements in the region. Edom's control over this route explains their reluctance to allow a large crowd to pass through.

Events and Customs

The Water Miracle at Meribah parallels an earlier event at Rephidim (Exod 17:1-7), but with significant differences. Here, Moses was to speak to the rock, not strike it. The Hebrew word for "rock" is also different: סֶלַע (sela – a large, steep cliff) here, versus צוּר (tsur – a solid bedrock) in Exodus. Moses' action of striking the rock twice instead of speaking to it resulted in him and Aaron being denied entry into the Promised Land.

Priestly Succession is described in detail in verses 25-28. The removal of Aaron's priestly garments and their clothing upon Eleazar before the entire congregation ensured a public and orderly transfer of the high priesthood. This ceremony established precedent for how priestly authority was to be passed on in Israel.

Thirty Days of Mourning for Aaron (v. 29) corresponds to the same period later observed for Moses (Deut 34:8). This was the longest mourning period in Israelite tradition, reserved for the most significant leaders. The phrase "all the house of Israel" emphasizes that the grief was universal.
